Guys,
My 1972 F-100 exhaust manifold donut keeps leaking after replacement and the nuts on the manifold bolts keep loosening. I have lock washered, double nutted, and thread locked with no viable results. The old donut was a steel one and i've replaced with the gasket type with poor results. I'm looking for another steel one but can't seem to find one...any help finding one or suggestions as to how to fix my ever loosening nuts (,,,on the exhaust manifold).
Thanks,
The exhaust donut is Fel Pro part number FEL-60987.... a $1.99 from my local O-Reilly.
I had an exhaust leak on my 70 and it turned out the donut would do no good to seal it up.. the leak had gone on for so long that that the exhaust gases eroded away the mating surface on the manifold so bad that the donut was never going to seal it up. Run your fingers along the mating face to check.
Oh, the donut is made of compressed powdered metal held together with a resin. It'll break into two pieces with uneven clamping pressure... ask me how I know!
As far as the loosening issue, I assume that the clamping force is uneven and with all the vibration allowing the two-holed donut clamp to walk itself and the hardware loose.
Weird I had bad luck with the steel one I ended up using the fel pro bluish gasket style one and its worked great. It could be ur exhaust pipe flaring. Check to see if the flare is even and solid if not take your old exhaust pipe pieces to exhaust shop they made me new one in 5 minutes for 5$. Just my 2cents.
