Bought a new f350 lariat. I wired in some extra back up lights and mounted them on top of the bumper. We tied them into the stock back up lights. Everything works fine when the truck is off but key is on and truck in reverse. Once the truck engine is running, the lights will flash on, and then turn off untill you turn the truck off and start over.
Any one know how to make this work? I tried to search on here to no avail.
Sounds like too much current draw.Like PSD stated i would install a relay and use the reverse light circuit as the relay trigger and pull 12v for your lights from the battery.
Do the truck backup lights flash off too? Or just the lights installed?
IMHO...I'd run the connection to the RV 7-pin. I'm not certain which color wire is the backup, but the center pole ( #7-pin) is for Back up lights or Aux.
Just trace the center out the back...and you'll have your back up light power.

Thanks!
If you tapped the hot lead for the reverse lights directly, you are placing too much current draw on the circuit. I suspect the PCM senses the extra amperage and shuts down the circuit until you reset it by turning the truck off and back on.
As a previous poster suggested, instead tap the reverse wire that feeds the 7-pin trailer connector. It is fused for the extra load and isn't subject to the PCM's direct control.
The center pin of the 7-pin trailer connector should be reverse. Test it with a meter or probe to be sure. The wire color is GY-BN.
Ground wire color is WH and it is Pin #2 in this schematic:
