On a related note, where is the best (not neccesarily the easiest) way to tap some additional back up light? And does it make sense to use the existing reverse lights to power a relay instead?

I think I would use a relay, and a separate fused feed to supply the lights. The reason I say that is we all know the manufacturers only use as much as they have to to make things work.. Depending on the wattage of the aux back-up lights you could get an overload situation pretty easy.
That's just me, I have been accused of overkill a few times.. But, knock on wood, I haven't burnt one down yet either..
since i don't know what a mlps is, i can not answer that question.
the reverse light neutral safety switch should be on the trans behind the shift arm.
Yes...you are talking about the MLPS (manual lever position switch) or also known in the older vehicles as the neutral safety switch. I did recently replace that...and I will double check the setup although I have no issues with the gear selection or lever position in my dash cluster.
AutoZone.com has some schematics. You need to register(free) and go to repair info.
Thanks....may give that a look. I know the Haynes manual has them....and I Haynes manuals for several vehicles, but do not have one for the '95. I am going to wiggle my shifter around the R and see if they come on at any one magic spot.
