Spent more time than i care to remember on the signalbridge
of a knox class frigate "plane Guarding" during carrier ops.....
and yep i agree...lots of S-3 Vikings,EA-6's,F-14's,and F-18's
but the F15's and F-16's were curiosly vacant.....interesting thread
however......Go Navy!!
Of course the last time I was on the carrier (USS America) I never saw any F-15 or 16's. Plenty of A6's, A-7's, EA6B's, F-14's, S-3's, and E2-C's. Of course that's been - HOLY COW!! 18 years ago!!!
I could make a general statement - that "If it has a hook on the tail, it's NAVY".
-But that would be erronious. (Helo's being one of the exceptions)
But it seems to me NAVY test pilots fly anything with wings on it.
EVERYONE ELSE in the NAVY deals with a limited inventory of STOL/VSTOL aircraft specifically designed for shipboard operations.
These include F-14, F-18, and all of those in the list I saw up near the top of the thread.
Unfortunately - if an F-15 strike eagle, or an F-16 falcon tried to land on a carrier - the lack of an arresting hook would send it off the far end of the flight deck at what would still be a considerable amount of speed...
Though probably not enough to get it back in the air again.
Strangely enough though - there was once a series of tests to see if a C-130 could land and take off from a carrier, and yes it could.
That 130 came within feet of taking out the tower.
But F-15s do have an arresting hook, of sorts. in case of an IFE
Problem is, is that the landing gear are set up differantly a 15 or 16s landing gear would shoot through the top of the plane if it tried to land on a carrier
I worked f-16's for 3 years, they do have a tailhook for IFEs, but they were also built to land on a carrier because the Navy was looking to test them also. They do or did in the beginning have carrier landing gear as an option if the Navy did want them. The Navy said no, something about being over water with 1 engine I assume.
Quite possibly, they are the worlds largst, most expensive lawn dart. What can I say, my plane can lose 3 engines and still take off fly around for half a day and land again.
As long as the wings don't fall off, literally, likle those two guard birds over in Colorado, we are losing about 10 planes because they put out an immediante action TCTO about that issue.
