Overdrive Clark Five Speed Information Compiliation

I have been searching for a good overdrive swap for my '66. I have decided that an overdrive Clark from behind an FT/Y-block would be the best.

The transmissions that I have found that might work work are as follows:

251VO
264VO
280VO

From my research (and others) I have found that the 264 and 280 are synchronized while the 251 is constant mesh. Is this correct?

I have also read about a few overdrives in the 300 series, but those are larger and unnecessary.

I have read of some mention of the following:

264VOHD
280VOHD
282VO
285VO

Where any of these installed behind FT's/Y-blocks?

The Clark numbering system had the model (280VO) followed by 2 numbers like this: 280VO-21.

Can anybody (tripleframe and NumberDummy) finish the model numbers of the aforementioned transmissions that would be behind a Ford motor. It would also be very helpful if someone could supply the the input shaft diameter and spline count.

Maybe this will save someone a bit of trouble down the road.

When installed in a F 350, 5 speed was a DSO

From a 1964 camper magazine.I would love to find this F 250 today. Buckets seats and 5 speed overdrive with the 4.10 ratio, wish more would have been special ordered this way!

Wow. How many books do you have? That is interesting stuff.

I found a 280 VO 21 for sale on the internet. The only thing it says about it is:

FORD APP
FRT RET 230211

What would this have come in? What motor could it have been behind?

I appreciate your research very much.

In 1966 Ford used 7 different Clark Transmissions.

The VO was a .799 OverDrive Unit

Per what I have

Clark 250V SYNCRO 5SPD 174.70 $
251VO SYNCRO 5SPD OD 174.70 $
2653-V1 SYNCRO 5SPD 189.00 $
264VO SYNCRO OD CAME WITH 12" X 4" PARK BRAKE
2622-V1
305V
307V

tHE OD TRANS HAD :

REV 6.00
1ST 6.06
2ND 3.50
3RD 1.80
4TH 1.00
5TH .799

IN 1966 Ford used 38 different truck transmissions! Depending on engine and which model.

These transmissions were shelf items available to all truck manufactures. Just like the New Process 435, there are variations to fit either GM , Ford or Dodge etc. THe safest way is to locate a period Ford with this transmission bellhousing and engine still intact.

More info, this time from 1968. Looks like the 280 series is the better unit behind a larger engine.

Do you have any info on the 2 numbers in the suffix? What numbers were for which manufacturer and/or motor?

Sounds like an awful lot of work searching and installing a trans that only has a input tq rating of between 260-325 lb ft. That about puts out any decent Ford V-8 or 300 6 cyl.

I have seen gear vendors overdrive units sell for around 1200.00 or less. Why not just install one of them? Much better unit you will never break and you will get a 22% O.D.

I would bet that the 280 can handle a fair bit more.

I have researched a lot of options for my '66 4X4. I have 5" to work with before my center drive line gets too short. The gear vendors adds 13". The ranger overdrive box adds 7 1/2". The 280V Clark fits. I have heard it rumored that the 280VO shares the same case as the 280V.

The NV4500 also fits, but I can't use advance adapters adapter plate because my bellhousing/current input shaft are longer than the later NP435 bell housing/input shaft. I would have weld my bellhousing up, drill and tap it. One of the bolt holes would be off the flat mounting surface so it would have to be built up. If all else fails, that is what I will have to do.

Another question; What year did ford use the 264V non overdrive transmission? What gears were synchronized?

Too many applications to list, so here's 1966 only.

Why doncha get the CD of the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog from hipoparts.com and then you can look this jazz up for yourself.
