Looking into getting an Excursion

Hello everyone!
I'm Matt, and I'm turning 16 next month. I've been looking for my first "real" car- you know, that car that's your baby, that you do everything with!

I currently have an 05 Chevy Avalanche, but I need to tow much more than the 1500 or 2500 can handle, and it's tranny isn't the greatest. At first, my dad wated to be able to tow his D7 bulldozer. Thing is, nothing can really tow it safely, plus we would be overweight.

So, I am looking for a truck/SUV that can tow 4 ATV's and several dirt bikes with ease. Also, I need to chauffeur around 5-6 friends with me. We would be towing and making trips to offroad about once a week.

So, I spotted a red 04 Excursion at a nearby dealership. Specs go as:
2004 Excursion Eddie Bauer
186,000 miles
2nd row Captains Chairs
3 DVD screens- aftermarket
2WD
5.4l Engine, gas
$5900

I was wondering if it's reliable, how to test the conditon it's in before buying, if the price is good, if it's a good engine choice, and any other info/ideas you can provide. I'd like to offroad/mud with it, and climb some small rocks occasionally.

Thanks,
Matt

It is 2wd. Can't do much mudding. The 5.4 is on the low end for towing it works hard just pushing the 8,000 lb Ex around. It will tow, just need to rev the motor. Those with the 5.4 will post up...

How are maintainance costs? If something breaks, I don't want to be out too much!

All depends on what you want done, upgraded and can do yourself. Honestly, the ex is a lot to drive around and fit in parking spots for a new driver.
If you are thinking of getting in auto repair it would be a good learning tool. At 10mpg it will also tax your finances and your insurance rates.

A 5.4 will tow what you are wanting although it won't be quick doing so.

If you want something that is still pretty cheap, gets almost as good of gas mileage, and will still last you a VERY long time, look for a good, cheap V10 Excursion.

As far as stuff breaking, about the most expensive part that is likely to break is the tranny. There are several things you can do once you get an Excursion to increase the life of the tranny. We can point you in the right direction.

Most of the other stuff is just normal vehicle stuff.

Ball joints can be a costly repair and with that many miles it's either already been done or will need it soon. Find out.

Good tires can cost around $1,000 for a set so figure that in to your equation when looking for one.

Anyways, welcome to our little corner of the internet and good luck with you search!

(Oh, and I don't think any 3/4 or 1 ton can legally pull a 27,000 pound D7.)

I'm quite good at driving large cars. I do fine with the Avalanche, and have driven a extended Escalade, F-150 crewcab, Acura MDX, and Hummer H2 easily.

My dad's excellent with cars, he's disassembled and reassembled a 05 Land Rover in a day, he knows what he's doing. He's able to fix it, but I want to take responsibility myself as well The part costs and accessibility are what I'm wondering about. I just want to be able to fix it if something goes wrong.

E: Thanks, how's this one sound?

2001 Excursion Limited
102,080 miles
2WD, V10 engine
$8000

I'd like something newer, honestly, but I'm going for lowest cost. I also want it as stock as possible, the one I listed has a cheap aftermarket head unit and some of those off-brand speakers. I want this thing shiny and clean, like it just rolled out the plant!

5.4L will not tow good. 6.8L or Diesel is better

Make sure it's a 4x4 v10 if you intend to any mudding, the 2 wd will just be sinking in the mud

Not to sound like a snob....

I'll assume you being a new reiver means you are a teenager. Have you run the numbers to see what this thing will cost you to fill up once, let alone on an actual ownership basis? These vehicles have a 44 gallon tank. When I was a teenager, i drove as far as often as I could, that was when gasoline was sub $1.00, let alone $ a gallon!

I cringe when I have to fill it up, let alone a few times a day as I do when I'm traveling!

I hope you aren't disuaded by this, just hope you know what you're getting into!

You don't have to assume anything. The second sentence of his first post he told his age.

But yes, you need to know what you're getting into. At only $2.95 a gallon, I still spent over $100 filling mine up today and she wasn't even empty.

$3.89 a gallon over here, $4.00 for diesel
A fill-up would cost about $170

The truck would be put under the name of my dad's company, making it write-off'able for taxes, so money spent on gas=somewhat deductable We also get reduced gas prices, because of a corporate account (my dad has to pay worker's gas bills and equipment fuel costs,) so he buys a LOT of fuel monthly. They deduct at the end of the month, when the bill comes in.

The fuel for this thing isn't my biggest concern. I pay $120 right now for gas, and I fill up 2x weekly. I get about ~10 MPG in the Avalanche.

How's the reliability and safety? I'm thinking this may be a little big to drive daily, and parking is kinda hard at my house. Maybe a Ranger would work?
