87 starting issue

hello have an 87 ranger with the 2.9, auto.

cant get it to start at all. its been sitting about 3 months. started fine before winter. postive cable is cracked and the terminal where the bolt is at is partially broken.

ive tried jumpng it, cleaning the terminals & connections on the block/relay, tried charging batt and tried jumping the starter at relay.

it does nothing without a charge or jump. but it clicks forever when the charger is hooked up. i got to get it moved tonight so im heading to the parts store and changing the positive cable completely.

im thinking its the starter or relay? when i jump the starter it does nothing but hum, im assuming thats the fuel pump kicking on?

bit lost at this point, any ideas would be appreciated. i have a brand new duralast gold in the 4.6 mustang im going to hook up to the new cable once i get it installed....but i get the gut feeling its not going to help much

Welcome to FTE.

It would seem to me that you are on the right track with the cable and battery - I would go ahead and replace the cable and swap batteries - then report back what happens...

How cold is it there? Around here, it gets cold enough to freeze the battery and, if that happens, it can cause problems similar to what you're experiencing (the freezing usually kills the battery.)

gotta love fords, drove her up to the store under her own power.

she cranked up immediately with the new battery cable and mustang battery. had the old tested while i was at oreilys and its definitely gone so ill be getting a new one soon.

not too cold here, but its been in the teens lately. probably a good measure to remove the battery if it's going to be sitting in that temperature?

I don't think removing the battery is necessary - a good battery can hold up to the cold - it's the ones that are on their last legs that the cold kills...

Starting the truck up now and then to get the current flowing through the battery helps...
