Hello everyone! I have a problem that I hope some one has an answer for. I have a 89 F150 4x4 with a 302 5spd Trans. The problem is if the truck sits overnight and come to start it in the morning its appears that the battery is dead, but at the instant I put booster cables on, everything is normal. you just touch the cables to the battery and its like nothing was ever wrong! I have changed both battery cables, new battery, starter solonoid, starter, checked all the ground cables, replaced ignition switch in the column. This problem only occurs in the winter, below -10c, never in the summer. Any help would be appreciated as its getting cooler these days! thanks.
When it acts up, I'd recommend to take a voltage reading, starting across the battery, then from the battery to the starter relay, ect. Looking for either a bad/run down battery or a poor connection. If the battery voltage is starting out low, look for something slowly draining the battery. When it's cold it takes more juice to start the truck and the battery has less available so a drain will show up as a problem more when it's cold.
Goonski, I had a similiar problem with my Cherokee. It turned out to be a loose negative battery cable connection at the engine block. Check all your grounding straps and cables.
THanks for the input guys! As i was raedind your replys I realized that the only cable that I didn't replace or check was the positive cable from the starter solonoid to the starter. I'll have to wait though for the next time this happens. Thanks again I'll keep you updated on this.
