Hello fellow F.T.E.,
I have my 62 Uni with a 290 V-8 3 on the tree. I am wanting to put in a bigger V-8 with an automatic trans. Now I am in a position to put in a 460 with automatic, however I am wondering how difficult would this project be ? Would it be worth the time and trouble ? Also to consider the 460 very well may need to be rebulit, same as the original 290. For both engines have not been running for quite some time. Please help with some help. Thanks.
You can put the later engine your 62 in place of your 292, but it will require some special mounts. Those "engine adapter" type crossmembers can be had from several vendors. Look around at all the usual suspects and you'll find them. They run about $75 or so and you'll also need a transmission crossmember. Another $40 or so.
Trans-Dapt makes them. They have mounts for 289 ,302, 351w, 351m / 400, FE's,and 429 to 460. Drop me a line if you want and I'll give you some more detailed info. I can't say thier names here.
Good luck,

I thought that the 390 was a bolt-in swap for a 292. There are FE bellhousings that will bolt up to the original bellhousing mounts and you can re-use the transmission.
The bellhousings sell on ebay all the time. All you need to do is locate a good running 390.
I have a similar question. I have 352 4speed standard in my 64 f-250 4x4. Would I also have to get new crossmembers and make motormounts to fit a late 70's 460 with c6 auto? Up until now I have left it because I have the 352 purring like a kitten, and everything is still stock. But I was thinking of making it into a bit of a mud runner, more torque and automatic would be the way to go. Still undecided whether to stray from my good ol' stock 352. May not be worth all the hassle.
The 390 (FE) isn't a "bolt-in" swap for a Y-block (292-312) I suppose you could find an FE bellhousing that uses the side mounts and go from there, but as far as I know the FE's didn't go in the trucks till 65.
As far as swapping a 352 to a 390. That IS a bolt=in.
66MercMan,
I forgot to mention that if you want a hassle free engine upgrade you can always go with a built 390/410 or 428. Those all "bolt-in". The 390 is pretty easy to find and won't cost a bunch to build. The other 2 are harder to find and cost a lot more to rebuild. It's one of those deals where they say, "Horsepower is money, how fast do ya wanna go?"
Good luck,
Thanks CustomCab, I will have to keep an eye out for a 390 or 410. My 352 is still a good motor, with some work it could have enough HP for what I need, is there any good automatic transmission swaps for an old 352?
Yeah, you can put a C-6 behind it. If you have a divorced T-case I think you'd need a short shaft tranny.
Somebody else that has a little more early 60's "factory" 4x4 experience will have to chime in here. I'm not sure what all you'd need in addition to the trans to make that swap work. I'm especially not sure about the trans crossmember. ??
Good luck,
I do have a Divorce T-case. good to know. As far as the crossmember, I should be able to fabricate whatever I need. Once I find a FE C6 I should be good to go.
Thanks again.
Along the lines of engine swaps. I have a 64 that has a 289 mounted in it. I bought a bolt in mount kit to get a cleaner look and to provide a better mounting system. The current one is rather ugly looking. My problem is this mounting system will place the engine centered between the frame rails and my rear end has an offset to the passenger side. I have been wanting to cut the old ones out and change to the newer ones, but I do not want to create a new problem. I have always read where everthing needs to be in line.
