This makes me feel so sick, I feel so sorry for the parents as well as everyone else involved. Christmas time will never be the same for these people.
As far as gun control goes if someone wants one they will get one no matter what.
Brian
It's always a sad day when anyone dies, children just that much worse.
I would agree with alot of you it's society today, sad to say but I don't see it getting any better.
I would also agree with the idea that their is going to be more gun laws now, yet that is not the problem, it the people.
Again also why I have (mine an HCP) Handgun Carry Permit. While not for everyone, I can tell you I would rather have it and never need it then need it and not have it.
Garry, I think about your grandchildren quite often actually. I remember when it happened on the local news. And I remember the jolt I felt when I realized your story not long after we met. I am sure today was a terrible reminder. My thoughts are with you and those heartbroken people in Connecticut. Words just cannot express....
Garry, my heart goes out to you. No need to apologize, we are more like a family here and sometimes you need to let it out. It is a scary time in the world today, how have we fallen so far?
People know that places like schools have no protection because we don't allow guns anywhere near the schools. One trained person at the school could have saved many lives.
Larry, my parents live in Bolivar. Both of my parents have their CCW although they don't carry at this time. We need to meet up when I'm back down there.
It is so sad that people can be so sick that they do something like this and ruin so many lives with their sickness. People like this guy should just end their own miserable lives and leave everybody else alone.

Chuck,
I know yesterday was painfull for you. Thank you for sharing. The account of the fire was so very touching. Also, arround that same period, I remember a tragic school fire, I believe in Chicago, but I am not certain, A grammer school Our lady of the Angels. 92 kids. A scenario very similar to yours. A wood frame, multiple story. I was in the second grade at the time in NY Also an old 2 story wood frame, with a big hall in the center.
I rememberr right after the fire, they put fire escapes out our 2nd floor class rooms. But us kids were so young, we focused on the little kids that perished. Later on in the late sixties, that building was just used for the big hall, but was set on fire one evening. A spectacular blaze. I was away in the service at the time, but our guys said the fire spread so quickly that having kids in a building like that would have been deadly
we have to prepare our children that there are people in this world that only want to do us harm. no, don't scare the crap out of them but none the less, let them know to be diligent in whom they trust, trust is earned. what a terrible thing to happen, what a terrible time in our society that opens the door to atrocities like this. we can't punish one person enough to right this wrong. my kids are grown but those of you that have young ones, and lost young ones, my heart goes out to you and your road ahead.
I worked for 24 years in law enforcement, and I have an Ideal what those first responders are going through,It's not hard for me to relive some of the scenes I was involved in.People who have never been involved will really never understand how hard it is.As for what needs to be done to slow these acts down {they will never be completely stopped},We have to rearrange our priority's.In the 70's NY closed down most mental health hospitals and centers. This left many without care or hope, causing the homeless population to soar,It also meant that local government had to pick up the treatment, but this cost's big bucks, that they don't have.So the local centers are small, understaffed and underfunded. Most do their best, but I have been involved many times where the system fails. We seem willing to fund everything from bike paths to football stadiums, art shows, and the list goes on.Yet we won't find the $ needed for programs to help slower down this insanity. Some will call for more gun laws, why not start enforcing the ones we have. Many States have mandatory sentencing for gun crimes, yet most are reduced down,Criminals that have been convicted time after time are set free to repeat.Think about what would of happened if this kid had been stopped for speeding on his way to the school yesterday. He would have been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, and if he had no violent criminal history,he would have ended up on probation for a year.Yet the laws that he could of been charged with would have sent him away.[This is if he had not killed his mother at home}.Sometime go to your local court house and look at the law library, then ask yourself if we need more laws or strict enforcement of the ones we have.
After over 20 years in Law Enforcement I have seen first hand the evil humans do everyday. The one thing that will stick with me for the rest of my days is no matter what it will never stop. All you can do is say a prayer and move forward.
i heartily agree with ev erythingyou said,dr, but most of us need someone to blame. i know the laws are in place that we need. can we blame the courts for being so leanient?
I too fee lthe pain for I lost a grandson and it breaks my heart to know that others will have to bear the pain. They where so young. We just must turn to God to help with the pain.
After the fire, they tore down the wooden school building that was built at the same time as the annex that burned I was attending and built a new fireproof masonry building, passed a federal law outlawing the construction of wood school buildings and set new standards for operating and egressable classroom windows. I went to the elementary school the burned annex had been attached to for 1/2 day sessions for a year while our new school was being built. Even tho the area had been cleared and graveled over, I could not even look at the site until I went to Jr High at the school next door 4 years later . By that time it had been paved into a parking lot.
DR Smith: I agree 100% with everything you said. Mental illness needs to be brought out of the attic and basement, medical providers need to be taught to diagnose mental illness as readily as they diagnose other illnesses, and it needs to be treated (and be covered by insurance like other chronic illnesses) at hospitals, not locked away in institutions like a criminal.
I also agree with punishing people who commit crimes with a firearm. Just this past weekend a gunfight erupted at a local flea market, leaving 2 people wounded, one critically. They arrested and charged 4 17 year olds in the incident. One of the arrested gunmen was out on bail from charges of not securing a firearm. A 15 year old that lived in the house with the gunman had taken his gun to school in May, and then took it again and shot to death the 13 year old sister of the gunman Nov 1.
