I have a 73 f100 2wd with a bone stock 360 FE i got from my granddad (R.I.P). I'm lookin to make this more into a street truck but still wanna keep the high torque for whenever i have to use it to haul or tow. Gas isnt a big deal seeing this wont be much of a daily driver. i just got a few questions and i was wondering if anyone can help me. just trying to get the horses up without tearing too much into the motor and rebuilding it. Open to all suggestions. Thanks.
Performance wise would it be better to run true duals or add a x or h pipe to it?
Will a 4 bbl carb mount up properly with the stock 2 bbl manifold?
Right now its one tire fire on stock rims. I wanna change the gears out and have it posi trac. what would be a good ratio to run?
im not an expert but i think i would go with duals that exit before the back tires and use mandrel bent pipe(cheaper than going out back) as for the 4bbl carb on a 2 bbl intake, it wont work. have to get a 4bbl intake. gearing i would go with 3.73's but it will also depend on tire size. just my 2 cents
According to the fe experts, headers are a must. They say the stock manifolds for an fe are some of the worst designed of any engine
On an FE probably the "best bang for the buck" would be headers with true dual exhaust, followed by replacing the retarded timing chain and gear set with a "straight up timing" set (I believe pre-71 engines are straight up), then 4bbl manifold and small (600cfm) 4bbl with vacuum secondaries.
But not a whole lot will happen with a 360 unless you actually go inside and increase the compression ratio and add a decent camshaft.
And bighatchy is correct, the log style exhaust manifolds that the FE's come with are probably the most restrictive POS ever put on an engine.
On the rear gearing, the bigger the tire diameter, the lower the gear needs to be. So you need to decide how big you want to go before you decide the ratio.
If the tires are going to be close to stock diameter then I would go in the mid to high 3's (3.56-3.73). Going larger then you would need to get up in the 4's (4.11-4.56).

Yea I plan on stayin around stock diameter on the tires. Maybe run some 17 or 18x10s out the back. And I do plan on tearin it down once I get the money to do it all at once. Haven't driven it in a while because the trans went out. U have been a great help though. Anymore suggestions feel free to let me kno
