Pulled a 1356 transfer case out of a pickup the other day (finally). I broke it down to check out the internals to make sure the pump isn't going to spin on me and afterwards I realized that I didn't see a speedometer gear drive. It wasn't taken out of a bricknose like mine but a slightly newer f150.
It's going in this weekend and I'm bringing the pickup back with me. I planned on selling it but I'll need a working speedometer for that. Is it possible to switch to whatever the newer pickups used to drive the speedometer or will I need a third transfer case?
Electronic huh? That would require a new differential cover too. Well I suppose my best option is going to be rebuilding the old one and welding up the oil pump bracket deal. I was under the impression that 1356s were interchangeable with the only differences being yoke types and electric or manual.
