knocking sound
I have a knocking sound in my 1993 f-150 xlt. I thought at first it was the u-joints. It only does it after it has been sitting all night and it only knocks for about a block and a half and then it quits. A friend suggested to me that it was my speedometer cable knocking and when i drove it every morning for about a block and the oil got up in the cable it would quit. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have a speedometer cable. Can you tell where it's coming from? Does it do it if you don't go anywhere - just rev it in the driveway? Does the knock speed up with the wheels, or does it follow engine speed? Does it change depending on how hard you're accelerating, braking, or turning?

It only does it once it is in gear, either reverse or drive, and it only does it on the first start of the day. After it has been sitting all night, or if i let it sit all day without driving it, and get in it in the evening it does the same. The clicking noise is only apparent for about a city block though , then it quits. It is a very fast speed clicking sound too. I thought it was originally the u-joints, but my mechanic fails to see anything wrong with them.
