It doesn't have to be stainless. I, and others, have used steel tubing, brake or fuel line. Most parts houses will have it. Brass compression fittings.
I was lucky and have all sorts of tools from being a mechanic most of my life. Used to do a lot of tube bending when people would twist off fuel lines trying to replace quadrajet filters.
I've been calling places and going to local shops and couldn't find anything (here in the UK)...........then looked on ebay and there was everything I needed - don't know why I didn't think to look on there before I just searched stainless tube!
I plan on doing this on my truck, but have a few questions first. Do I have to put in a pre pump filter right now? I want to put one in in the future I just don't have the stuff to do it right now.

The only purpose of the pre pump filter is to protect the pump from getting mucked up from any chunks. Dropping the tank and doing the mods greatly increases the chances of getting something in there big enough to do just that. You don't need anything too fine, as that will just make the pump work harder than it needs to. You have a filter in the fuel bowl to do the fine filtration.
