As you may have seen in my previous posts, I am having some idling problems with my 95 explorer. I suspect either the MAF or the IAC. I've taken it to two differant places to have the codes read, to pinpoint the problem, but both places were unable to retrieve any codes. They suspect something is wrong with the connector . Is there a proceedure for testing these two parts? It runs fine above idle, while driving or while pressing the gas peddle in neutral or park, but the RPMs go from near stall to 1200 or better at idle.
Sorry, I haven't read your other postings. If the IAC is easy to remove on your vehicle, I would take it off and clean it out. Ford doesn't recommend cleaning it with carb cleaner, but rather replacing it with a new one. Cleaning and replacing would be the cheapest test however.
On my Explorer/Mountaineer, with a 5.0, the IAC is right on top. The problems I've had with the IAC on other Ford products was erratic idle while coasting to a stop (on a Taurus), that was especially noticeable a night as the headlights would go brite then dim based on the idle. Took the IAC off, cleaned it and the problem was resolved. On a Mark VIII the idle would stick in warm weather coming to stops at 1200 rpm vs normally 750. The idle would jump to 2000 putting it in park while in the garage. Because of the location on a Mark (extremely difficult to get at) it made sense to go ahead and replace the IAC. The new one fixed that problem.
IMO, the other easy item to check out is the MAF sensor. Have you taken off the airbox and tried cleaning it?
Best of luck

Viiidude, Thanks. I have tried cleaning both. I have a feeling the IAC has gone. The engine runs well with the exception being at idle. I found a better repair manual at the library that has more detailed test procedures for both the MAF and IAC, and am planing to go through it tomorrow.
Turned out to be the IAC. Replaced it today, and it now runs great . Thanks to all that have replied to my posts, your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
