hx35 redneck engineering

hey guys just thought i would do a lil write up on my hx35 install it is very hoakie at the moment so be warned!!!haha
i started off buy building a lift bracket for the oil drain on my 093...
all that had to be done there was a piece of flat stock a 17mm junk socket a couple washers and the o ring off the oil drain
the oil drain only has to be raised to clear the compressor housing from the injector lines and it only has to go up just above factory mounts..i set mine to where my nuts sat on top of the original tabs on the manifold

first you take your 17mm socket and cut it in half (you dont need the extra poking completely thru the cdr hole just enough to fill it) and center it in your piece of flat stock (which should just be tab to tab width) and do a plug weld on it then i took a fender washer a lil bigger than the 17mm and stuck it on the socket and welded it from the inside by the socket in the gap i had from getting it larger and a few tacks around the outside then your washer that is perfect around the socket and full weld around the outside of it to the face of the bigger washer than your o ring fits good around socket and has perfect face to seal against

the spot on the oil drain that used to hold the o ring has to be cut almost completely off in order to remain in a straight line with the oil drain in the bottom of the valley pan. on the bottom of the oil drain i ground off the sealing lip to make the end hold a hose and hose end fits tight inside oil drain grommet in the pan.
next was the up pipe which was generally easy as it was only a very short distance to change up and actually helped give it a straighter shot in.

no i dont have a bender so yes everything has to be in a thousand pieces haha

the intake hat sealing flange is made out of the bottom flange of an n/a idi air filter assembly...it has a rubber oringish thing that sits inside the bottom that i removed and filled up with high temp jb weld and set on a piece of paper on my counter to make a nice sealing edge i then found a cooking pan about the right size of 5 1/8 had to do some cutting to trim up but then welded that to the intake flange and just a upside down nut for a sealing flange on top...i started off with a 3" 35 degree bend which i cut out and welded in the corner and was going to be for my intercooler hat but temporarily changed it up as i dont have enough 3" mandrel

and as for the oil feed the holset has a metric thread fitting for the oil feed and an oring on the other side..so i picked out the o ring and the fitting from the 093 almost fits in the oring slot just a slight drill to the center and it sits right in the oring hole and i welded it up

but that is really all it took to get it on her...i dont have the air filter assembly done yet it will go in passenger battery tray and fuel filter will go on the box in front of the blower motor but as of right now driving like i have an eggshell under my foot i seeboost starting just after 1100 i have about 2-3 at 1500 and 6 cruising at 70 @ 2000rpm if im at 1500and just hit it i can see 12 almost right away and hit 18-19 by 2000 but im fueled out cause i dont build anymore than that and i have the wastegate welded shut. so intercooler and fuel and she will be set

Meh, I took mine out just for the helluv-it and didn't notice any performance change...and mine is pretty much a baffle, so once removed, the tip of my comp wheel protrudes out (theroreticly making perform worse) but didn't notice any change

its a 093 setup so it has 2 or 2 1/4 for the crossover from driver to passenger y and into 3...for about a foot...when i initially did it i gained 2 pounds of boost at 1500 rpm! just by changing the squished charge pipe out

that was the first one i did for the 093 setup so an even straighter shot now!

Flow vs velocity, always wondered which was better pre turbo

well i think the squish affected the velocity cause it would slow it down and have to repressurize right before the turbine wheel my theory anyways and it seems to work good

of course maybe it would be better to do 2 1/2? i dont know maybe ill try it!

When i put mine on, i just used the factory NA Y and for the up pipe, just some that was past the Y, i think its 2 or 2.25 double walled, i kinda thought it would keep the heat in, but it was also free, i had it, and it actually fit really well to both the bellhousing and the turbo flange.

BTW dont feel bad, i have you beat on "hoky-ness" My hx35 came off a street sweeper and never had a silencer ring. Compressor housing isnt near as smooth as yours, interesting.

By charge pipe I was referring to the big metal candy cane going to the intake.

Im by no means being judgmental however, part of the IDI's fun is being different.
