Stupid novice question:
Have a 98' Mustang GT 5-speed
Is it possible to use this motor/Tranny/chassis etc... for a 52' F-1 ?
I am going to be able to get the truck body cheap.
Thanks,
JMD
Yes...there are a lot of guys on this forum with small block Ford engines and T5 transmissions in their F1 trucks.
The engine converison itself is pretty straightforward, but there are a few other considerations....brakes, steering, radiator, and maybe the rear end.
Do a search on small block Ford F1, or use sbf, or 289, 302, 351w as variations on your search.
I don't want to discourage you, however, if you are thinking chassis as in a frame could be used; the short answer imho is do not go there. The most expensive way to finally have a competed truck is buying in pieces. The lowest first cost will normally result in the highest final cost. If you want a complete truck, buy the most complete and best quality sheet metal that you can find. You will be money ahead.
If your dead set on a new chassis you can use an old s10 frame, can't remember what years. I'd bet its posted on here somewhere. The small block ford and t-5 should be no problem. Lots of posts on putting t-5's in these old trucks. If you got the money and really want a new frame Fatman Fabrications can supply you with anything from a bare chassis to a completely outfitted rolling sub assembly,as can no limit engineering.
Yes and no on the drivetrain. The 98 Mustangs used the 4.6, which will fit but it's tight, a much bigger engine than the older 5.0's/302's. The T5's in them are strong but use a cable-operated clutch linkage, which would be really tough to adapt to your truck unless you put the whole pedal assembly in it, and that would be tough to do. Finally, the Mustang T5's have a shifter that is way back and will come up at about the front of the seat.
