I need some advice from someone familiar with the A4LD transmission. This one is in a 1990 Aerostar with about 150K miles.
Recently, when I was trying to merge onto the highway, I pushed the gas pedal almost to the floor, expecting a downshift. But instead the transmission felt like it completely disengaged, allowing the engine to spin up, doing nothing but make a lot of noise. When I let up on the pedal, it re-engaged, and resumed acting normally. It happened again today, so I'm worried that something is starting to fail inside.
The fluid was replaced (fully flushed) about 5000 miles ago, looks clear and pink, and the level may be a little high.
The transmission otherwise seems to be operating; it shifts through all 4 gears, and engages the locking clutch, as I take it up to highway speeds. It also shifts through the gears when I manually shift through them with the shift lever.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
