Difficulting Engaging Gears
What should I start looking at? Is there any linkage external to the tranny that could be worn out?
.What motor and tranny? Regardless of that, I'd check the fluid level in the reservior in the hydraulic clutch system first. My next thought would be that it may need bleeding or a component is beginning to fail. How does the cluth pedal feel? Does it begin to release the clutch with a fairly high pedal or is the pedal down near the floorboard?
My Ranger has been a bit cranky about going into first gear since the day I bought it new. I think it just goes with the territory. I've heard talk about people using a tranny fluid called "Redline"; you may want to do a search on that. Also, do NOT force things. You don't want to bend a shift fork and create a real problem. Instead, try shifting into another gear momentarily before shifting into first when stopped.
