Ford 390 Swap

I have a 86 F-150 300 i6 with 4spd tranny. Looking to swap a 390 in place of the 300 6. Just need to know if it is possible.

The V-8's for these trucks use a rear sump oil pan. The FE may need some custom motor mounts but the transmission should fit into the crossmember slots without too much trouble. You may need to get the driveshaft shortened and rebalanced.

Do you already have the 390 and a transmission? If not, a 400 will fit and you can get the correct oil pan and pick-up tube.

Why does this swap keep coming up? Where are all these 390's coming from? I hate this swap. Why? Because it will not bolt in, it was never offered in these trucks, and there are no factory pieces to make it all work. Ford made engines just as good or better than the 390 that will bolt in. Everytime you go to the parts store, you had better know what you need, and what year truck to tell them you need it for.

Buy a 79 or earlier truck and the 390 will bolt in and everything will fit up.

Yeah after doing some research on it I have decided against it. Maybe I will pickup a 79 and put the 390 in that. Just looking for something to do with the motor.

If you don't need a truck and can get past the Mustang fetish, there are a lot of Torinos, Fairlanes, Thunderbirds and Galaxies to play with.

Thanks. Yeah I am all about Fairlanes. A buddy of mine has a 64 he is restoring. Maybe I can take it off his hands.
