Am I correct that the drain passage is above the IPR, approximately inline with the non-serviceable plug and the bore that the edge filter would normally reside? From the front face of the pump, it looks like it has a steel shaft pressed into it. I pulled on that port with my Mytivac and it holds the 24" Hg or ~12psi that my pump will pull. Clogged drain?

The drain should be above the IPR .. The IPR controls the drain . The oil flows through the edge filter. If you don't have one I am stumped ...

Don't say that Rick. I don't want to have a problem that you are stumped on.

Side question. I've read that the edge filter intent was to protect the IPR from debris. What good would it do the IPR if it's on the drain side?

Should this drain passage be open from the front cover side to the edge filter? What if my pump is one of the early ones that has a check valve for drainback prevention? The port when looking from the front cover side definatly looks like it has a steel shaft insert in it, of smaller diameter than the drilled hole in the pump body casting. I think if I can get a hold of Joey, that this pump needs to go back and get torn down.

See the pic in this post. This is the port I'm talking about. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ont-start.html

I sent Joey another email today, and this time it didn't come back as undeliverable. Hopefully I'll hear back from him in the next few days.

Oil ether goes through the IPR to the injectors , or bypasses it to the drain .The edge filter is either upstream in the pump , or in the IPR ...

Got a reply from Joey today. He thinks my ICP sensor is bad.

At one point I thought I had bookmarked an electrical test but can't find it. Anyone know how to test an ICP sensor with a multi-meter?

I got my pump back from Joey. He checked it out and said it's fine except for needing a new input shaft seal. The seal was dislodged, crooked, and backwards compared to OEM configuration. Evidently the backward seal was an experiment Joey was toying with a few years ago. Pump drain was clear,he gave me a different IPR to try. At this point I'm thinking I'll put it back in and try it. I have not messed with the ICP yet, figured I could unplug it and see if that makes a difference once I get it running again.

Got it back together and things went from bad to worse. Sitting outside, not plugged in, about 30F.

Topped off hpop res. ICP prior to start while letting glow plugs run was 35psi and it fired after maybe 10 secs of cranking.

Terrible romping. ICP is all over between maybe 400 and 1500psi. Hesitant to respond to the pedal. Unplugging ICP didn't help and then unresponsive to pedal. Unplugged injector harness legs and could tell it got worse, so the injectors are firing, just running like crap.

Cracked oil plugs in heads, no air, just oil. Checked hpop res, still full, but could see bubbles. Pulled dipstick, and oil is aerated.

Tomorrow I think I'll pull the fuel canister again and swap the IPR back to my old one and see if that makes any difference. Any ideas?

It takes a long, long time to bleed the system of air. Cracking the plugs helps but it still has to work the air out. I drove mine once 150 miles and it still started funny the next day.

I've never had romps like this in the past. I've had injectors and HPOP out before so I know some about the air. It fired and ran after I'd say 10 secs or so. I shut it down and restarted a couple of times with minimal crank time.

It would not be driveable like this. I'm hesitant to let it sit there and romp, am I being chicken? How much air in the oil is normal? I'm talking tiny bubbles, not foam. I usually only check my oil when it's been sitting for a while, so I don't know if this is normal air or not. Oil is cold, never made it above freezing today.

Maybe I'll plug it in for a few hours and try again tomorrow before I tear it apart again.

I don't know what more to tell you, if it were me I would take off in it and see what happens. Does it rev up sitting there?
