Which Timing Cover Do I Need?
I know that, generally speaking, the serpentine belt equipped F.I. 5.0 engines have a different timing cover than the older generation carbureted v-belt equipped engines. However I have a v-belt F.I. engine, circa 1985, which I'm lead to believe is a bit of an odd ball, and the timing cover may need replacement. Just how many variations of these are there, and which one do I need? I would like to have one on hand before I tear into this.
Thank you,
Rick
Of course the FI covers do not have a spot for the fuel pump.
Your main concern is getting the timing cover and timing pointer to match the harmonic balancer. What I did was turn the engine by hand while watching the rocker arms on #1 cyliinder. When the valves are closed, and the zero timing mark comes around on the balancer, line it up to zero, and then do not turn the engine afterward. When you put the new cover on, your main goal is for the timing pointer to line up with the mark on the balancer.
Where are you going to get the cover? Here is a search I did in my state, and they are showing interchange with lots of cars and even a van. Just because it's serpentine doesn't necessarily mean it has a reverse rotation waterpump. Only if the waterpump pulley runs on the back side of the belt, and I was corrected once when someone said some of them run conventionally on the serpentine belt.

Thank you very much for the information. I'll probably order the part through the parts store I work at. Technically they don't show one for my truck. 1985 through about 1988 is sort of a 'black hole' for most of the listings, but many of the listings by aftermarket parts manufacturers are crap anyway, and should be taken with a grain of salt. In looking at all the used OEM covers on E-Bay, there seems to be about four different ones used between the carbed and F.I. engines, though in the aftermarket only two are shown in most cases. I'm willing to bet those aftermarket covers won't work in some cases, despite what the manufacturer states. Right now, I'm just not familiar enough with Ford stuff to pick up the subtle differences to know what will work on my own.
