I've done some searching but couldn't quite find my answer. Did the 48 f6 come standard with the 226 six? It would be a lot of help if someone could give me the engine and transmission options for the f6 that year. I am also assuming that the transmissions would all be non synchronized. Any help would be great.
Hmm... I thought the 254 big 6 was the optional engine, and the 239 v8 was standard for the f6. The HP rating for he 254 was a little higher (110?)than the 239 (~100) after all. I'll have to check my manuals later this evening.
48-50, the F6 158" wb and the F6 COE 134" wb if equipped with a 6 cylinder, it was the 254. As I understand, all of the 254 F6's came with the synchro-slent transmission.
226cid was in F6's. 254's were optioned as well as 239 v8's. transmission was typically the crashbox 4sp. with the T98 most commonly found behind the 254, though not always.
The serial plate on the firewall and glovebox will tell you what it came with. 7H =226, 8R=239 v8, and 8mth= 254.
The truck is a 158wb I just don't have access to the truck for a while and didn't know that Ford made both sizes. Can anyone confirm this? I'm pretty sure the 254 was available in 48.
I think the 254 was initially only in City buses (1948-49) and became available in the F-6 in 1950. The book Ford Trucks Since 1905 has the information, but I don't have a copy at my house.
yes, 254 was offered in buses only, in 1948 and 49.... model 8MB
1950 it was offered in the F6 as well.... model 8MTH, which was the same as the 8MB. 7H and 8R were still available in the 1950 F6. 1951-53 the 254 was still available, despite the 1952 change-over to the mileage-maker 215cid 6.
Best visual difference is to look at the block's casting #. 8MTH is 254. I bought a 1950 F6 parts truck, that was by all indications a 254cid 6 equipped truck, (even the intake manifold said 8MTH on it) but the block was swapped out for a 227.
