The side bulbs have a twist-lock base, but the center portion had a fairly standard base. I replaced just the center with a little LED panel with maybe 48 lights on it. It's really really bright, and find it very useful. It was just a cheap setup from Amazon.
I think he is talking about the 5 roof lights....the LEDs in the link will work. I can post pics tonite of my crew cab with the same lights, there not crazy bright but there noticably LED's.
yes, i am talking about the 5 cab/roof/clearance lights - not a dome light.
thanks 444 - so you run the exact lights that are in the link? they fit no problem under the stock housings? any room to go bigger, or are they about the max size?
there are brighter ones that superbrightleds offers, but they are noted as being "oversized" and i doubt they will fit.
if you could put up some pics that would be appreciated.
i am happy with the light i get out of the stock 194 bulbs as running lights, but i am working on an LED strobe setup for the cab lights, so thats why i want them as bright as possible. similiar to the kit thats available from atomic for the newer body style trucks. one is not made for the OBS trucks, so I am going to make my own.
I'll order up those lights from superbrightleds now that I know they fit. thanks again.
While Led bulbs are brighter than the standard bulbs it doesn't seem that they would be bright light strobe lights are. With just a standard LED bulb in there flashing it seems it will be more like a turn signal than a strobe light.

I am not sure what he is trying to achieve with the strobes in the cab marker lights. I have seen wreckers with strobes in the two outer marker lights as well as the turn signals. If he is going to use it for commercial purposes then the strobes have to have a minimum brightness, if he is just trying to go with the cool factor then I guess it wouldn't matter but then what would be the point
this will be used for snow plowing. just about all "strobe lights" that you buy today are in fact LED lights. maintianing the stock look is important to me as i don't want some big light bar on it. the truck also will have hideaway LED "strobes" in the tail and head lights.
i will be using a sho-me 2 output LED flasher along with 2 30 amp relays which will allow the cab lights to function as running lights, and then switch into "strobe" mode. it's not about the "cool" factor, its about being seen and keeping myself and others safe while plowing. it may not be as bright as i'd like, but it'll offer more visibility to others than i have with the stock 194 bulbs.
do a youtube search on atomic cab lights - they are LED lights and i think you will be surprised by the brightness - day or night. atomic provides new cab lights that have are larger than stock, so they can fit in a bigger and brighter LED bulb, but you'll get the idea. you will see many newer trucks outfitted with a kit by atomicon youtube - however atomic does not make a kit for OBS trucks, so I am attempting to build one myself.
I looked at the Atomic website. Their LED Cab lights have like 64 LED's inside. Keep in mind that the 194 LED bulbs are designed to meet DOT specs for marker lights not warning strobes. The 194 LED replacement bulb may indeed be bright enough to suit you for your needs. Me personally if i am going to go through the work of installing new lights I am going to want them as bright as possible.
installing the LED bulbs in the cab lights is easy - its no harder than replacing a burnt out bulb. the relays, wiring, and led flasher i am using will be capable of handling lights with over 100 individual LEDs, so the only limitation in my setup is the bulb, which is very easily changed.
i'm starting with the biggest and brighest LED bulb i can fit under the stock cab light housings as i want to retain the stock apperance. If i am satifisfied with the output, then great. if not, then i'll look to mount bigger cab lights housings that can accept a bigger LED bulb. the hard part is the wiring, but like i said, the wiring i will be doing will be adequate for most any LED bulbs - and certainly any LED bulb used as a cab light.
