I have a 1989 Ford van 4.9L straight six. It stopped ruinning today. It will turn over but not fire.I checked the fuel filter but it was clean and was new about a month ago.I also pulled a pl;ug and grounded it to the block and got no spark. I then pulled the coil wire to the distributor and grounded it and got no spark. SDhould I go to the TFI on the distributor (and how can I check it) or should I got to the Coil (and how can I check it) or should I just replace them both. Some one said in another message that autozone will check the ignition module if you take it to them.(and I do have the little wrench for that somewhere). Can someone hrelp Pleease.Thank you.
Sounds like the module failures I've had. I'd get it checked, but there are other things that can cause no spark besides that. I've never had a coil go bad, but it's not all that uncommon, I guess.
Might want to check wires to the coil, cap/rotor, stuff like that.
The coil can be checked with an ohmmeter. A Haynes manual would give you the correct values, plus a lot of other helpful info.
It'll never spark if the plug or coil wires are grounded - there has to be a gap. The Haynes manual has an excellent procedure for diagnosing the ignition system. You might also pull the codes.
Thanks guys. Between what I read of similar problems and what you told me I had problem fixed by Sunday. I used a multi meter Saturday after I removed the coil and ignition modul.Iread short on the modual and good on the coil. But I took the to Autoizone anyway. They checked them and said the same thing. So I bought a new modul and installed it by Sunday noon.So alls right with the world again! All I can say Now is:THANKS GUYS.
