I recently got a 1973 f-100 pickup. The motor was shot so i rebuilt it. It has new pistons, a new cam, new oil pump, new water pump, new coil, points, new heads with oversize valves, new crank. Basically a new motor. The block was fine, had it tested. Ive tried 2 different firing orders but nothin happens. I made sure theres gas in the bowls of the carb. Still nothing. I have the timing set right on the cam and crank. When i first tried cranking it the distributor was half out. So we corrected that and tried agin. It wanted to crank when we advanced the distributor but then it just stoped trying to crank. It has fire to the spark plugs but it still wont crank. I really need some good advice. I want it runnig before i leave for my basic training. please help
Does it crank but not start, or not crank at all? Each are separate issues, with separate solutions. I am assuming you mean the former, based on your description.
What engine is this? Do you have the choke closed when you're trying to start it?
Sounds to me something is binding the motor. Check to make sure the starter isnt stuck. For some reason I think it has to be with the distributor, what do you mean it was "Half out"?
This is not making sense. You're saying it does not crank, which means that the engine does not turn over at all as you hold the key. If that's the case, how did you check you have spark? Were you manually working the points? That's the only way to get spark without the distributor shaft turning.
The choke has nothing to do with the truck actually turning over. I only brought that up because your problem sounded like it would crank, but not start. But yes, that will prevent the engine from starting, once you get it cranking.
Are you not hearing the starter move at all? Is the solenoid clicking? What does "it wanted to crank" mean? Post #6 and we still do not have a clear definition of the problem yet.
Ok let me rephrase it. The starter turns and the motor turns o upver but it will not start up. At first when we tried to start it up i could hear it firing but it would not start up and run.
Okay, got it now. In that case, make sure the choke is closing before you try to start it. The engine will not start reliably with the choke gone if it is not already at operating temperature.
What do you mean the carburetor is upside down? Do you mean that it was upside down while you were handling it, before you installed it? That doesn't hurt anything. You're thinking of a 2-stroke engine.
