Coil spring mounts

A question for whoever.

1986 F100 4x4 Right hand drive.

I've pulled the front suspension apart in preparation for the installation of a lift kit.

Did not take much notice when disassembling the lower coil spring mounts and it was only when I was cleaning the rust and crud off them that I noticed one was about 8mm (5/6in) taller than the other.

So I checked in my parts list (original Ford Australia) and find that there is a different part for right and left side but which is which.

My guess is that the taller one goes on the right side to compensate for the weight of the driver (right hand drive vehicle).

However it could just as easily go on the left side to compensate for the weight of the mid fuel tank.

Or should they really be the same height.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Ross

I tried to do a search on the subject, and they only thing that came up was possibly the taller one goes on the pass side. What I would do is try to find a reference point. I suppose the spindle where the wheel bearings ride would be a good one if you can somehow use it. Measure from there to the top of the axle where the spring seat sits, and see if one of the axle housings is thicker than the other from the spindle reference to the spring seat.

By pass side I gather you mean the right hand side as your referring to a USA delivered vehicle. This is what I had seen but I can not find it again.

Had not thought of that. Will have to check.

Solved

The higher one goes on the right hand side.

I don't know why.

A mate of mine who is back in town owns a 1986 F100 4x4 as well so just went and had a look at his.

Cheers
