I actually love the ease now of the yellow plastic oil drain plug. The question, how long does it last before leaking? I'm doing 3rd oil change thus Saturday on this plug, and I have spare, but not sure if I should use it or if existing still good. What determines if good with these plugs?
I like the plastic plug. O-rings provide a good seal, probably better than a flat nylon or crush washer on a conventional drain plug. I haven't heard of one leaking but I'm sure it could happen.
Gotta be one of the dumbest parts ever designed. At some point the O-ring WILL leak, just a matter of when.
You mean just like the brass crush washer on the 6.0s leaked? That "smarter" part was designed to fail and is recommended to be replaced every few oil changes. The yellow plug is pretty ingenious and convenient in my opinion, but you could always replace your oil pan with the newer stamped steel pan if O-ring failure is a major concern for you.
It looks like the O-ring itself is not available separately but the plug assembly has a list price of $6.15.
That O ring is available somewhere...maybe not Ford, but someone has it. We just need to have the specs. I'll take it to my buddy and see if he can figure it out next time I'm there. He works at Oshkosh Truck and likely can get anything if he doesn't already have it in his shop. Personally, with the O ring getting lubricated with oil I don't think it will wear out as fast as you think. Dry rotting has been my experience with failures, not actual wear. Time will tell... I'm not worried.
It only turns a 1/4 turn. How much friction wear could it possible get?
There is a seal shop in Salt Lake that sells almost any kind/size of o-ring/seal imaginable. I'm sure if I took the existing one in, I could have a new one in minutes. The main problem is the $5 minimum counter charge. I would need to buy 20 or more o-rings to realize a savings.

I was going to see if the O-rings are available separately as the plug itself wont go bad, but have not yet done so.
Anyone know if it is and at what cost?
the o rings are not available as a ford p/n so ford sells the plug which comes with a new o ring. the o ring size is a 208, available at any industrial supply store that handles hydraulics etc. i bought 10 @ $ .75 each,
or $7.50 for ten. much cheaper than buying one plug for $6.15
if the oring is still pliable and not hard or cracked, it should be fine, i replace mine every third oil change, so cheap insurance for a potential oil leak !!
my plastic pan started leaking around the seal, bolts, and plug. Under warranty, I was tolf Ford will not fix these plastics pans. They replace them with the new updated part.... the metal pan with threaded plug.
..... Now to decide if I want to add a Fumoto to get an even easier way to drain the oil than the plastic 1/4 turn plug was.
Am I the only one who bought a new 2012 F250 6.7 that got the old school oil plug vs the new yellow quick plastic plug?
It's the opposite, the yellow plastic is old school. Starting in February 2012 build they went back to old metal pan with conventional drew on plug. Only 2011 and early 2012 have yellow plastic.
