Haven't been on here in a while but have a question. On my '96 F250 7.3 I have went through two water pumps in 125K. Is this the norm? The original one failed at 73K. Was told the fan clutch locked up and took it out? I replaced the whole nine yards, everything. Now at 125K it's leaking again. I bought a NEW water pump the last time. Maybe I ought to by a water filter.. I keep up on the additives and check my truck at least once a month. In short I take care of truck as it's job is pulling my 26' enclosed car trailer...
So....is this the norm. what can help prolong the water pump life?
Will a later plastic fan interchange on my truck. I hate the heavy stock 96 fan.
Sorry for long post..
You might be a but early it without a coolant filter, it's just going to keep happening. Just take the fan off. Lots of guys run no fan year round, I pull it during the winter.

I will install a coolant filter after this experience. I can't see pulling the fan because I tow a 9,000 lb trailer + tote a 2,400 lb camper !!! I see the water temp go to 3/4 mark now..and EGT's of 1250-1300 on hard pulls.
This truck works for a living..
Thanks for post

Understandable. However, I pull 10k+ with no fan and others pull even heavier. The cooling system, when working properly, is way overkill for these trucks.
Yes, get a filter! Are you saying the stock gauge goes 3/4's of the way up? If so, that's to high. Get a extra gauge to verify the temps. I'm also going to look into a 6.0 fan, its suppose to bolt right up. I pull heavy and I'm keeping my fan on.
