clutch problem, safe to drive?
clutch problem, safe to drive?
A few hours ago I had a new noise coming from around my transmission. Finally I heard it move to the dustcover/flywheel. Pulled the cover off and a chunk of spring fell out and while looking further seen more springs broke. The clutch isn't slipping.
I'm wondering how safe is it going to be to drive this truck for a few days until I can get me a replacement clutch in. Any ideas on this? Thanks for the help.

Is it the clutch or is it the dual mass flywheel? I would be concerned if it is the flywheel.
If that thing comes apart, there is a good chance that the transmission bell housing will be pretty well torn up. Some have even broken the aluminum casting to the point where they can't be reused. My $.02.... park it until you can get in there and get it fixed. Now that's not to say I wouldn't take the chance on driving it home, but I wouldn't use it any more than absolutely necessary. That's a bad situation that can make a small(ish) problem into a BIG one...
Also, you should really think about a single mass flywheel upgrade. Valair seems to be the brand that most are using lately.

Well, that wasn't good news. I'm about 25 miles from home, guess I better not drive my usual 70mph then.
I emailed Rubberduck asking for that contact info on that company. Waiting on his reply.
Parked this thing will be, just give me those 25 miles.
What all do you recommend I do on the clutch and anything else while I'm there?

Agreed. You will likely be okay going that far if you take it really easy. Oooh, man, makes my orifices pucker up to think about that thing coming apart....
At the very least, I think I would recommend replacing the pilot bearing and throw-out while you're in there. Master/slave should be okay and those can be replaced from outside the transmission. I would just do anything you can while you're inside the bell housing. No sense in going in there again any time soon.

Thanks fellers, you're on top of things as usual. All the info is much appreciated. I'll get this thing home and make that call in the morning. Sure will miss my truck for a few days. My back up is a real gas hog. I'll give you a shout if I run into any snags. Thanks again guys.
Pics it will be if I can figure out how to post them.
Got the truck home with no problem. Already call that company and a local auto parts supplier. Local is about $150 higher and didn't have that brand anyway. Guess who'll I'll be using?

Throwout bearing should be part of the clutch kit. Pilot bearing might not be, but indeed, it should be done. There's also an upgraded fork, pretty cheap from the dealer. Hydraulics will be fine, if you don't open it up (just unclip the slave from the tranny).
I've had an odd noise that sounded like the dustcover was loose and a slight vibration in this truck since I've owned it, could this had been the cause? Got it at 106,000, now 116,000
