Hey Mator! Welcome to FTE!

My comments were not meant to offend. I have the 4 speed "crash box" in my truck, which I have not yet mastered shifting without grinding gears. I put a video in my build thread of my first drive a few weeks ago, and the grinding is apparent on every gear change!

We'd love to see pictures of your truck.

Hey Mator,

I agree with all the guys. This is the best bunch of guys and gals you will ever find in a forum. They have helped me so much in my build.

Brings back when I first learned to double clutch. ( the idea is to get the engine the same speed as gears ) 1954 Seagrave Tractor drawn fire truck ( ladder truck with a tiller)

It took some practice, but later you could sometimes shift without a clutch

great fun

good luck. The guys will be an asset to you

from some of the oldtimers on here, first use a putty knife or scraper and scrape most of the heavy.stuff of first.
Then I use a little kerosend and wash at it with a parts brush. Repeat severa time with clean kero. Then I use Simple green ( bought anyware)

Stuff comes out squeeky clean

Welcome.Your in good hands here sometimes we get carrier away picking on each other but it is all good fun.Your trans will clean up just fine try a pressure washer or your local car wash when the owner isn't around. That style trans is easy to get apart ,and I am sure there is someone with a shop manual. That would copy the trans rebuild pages and send them to you.You can also ask if there is someone in your area that would be willing to come and give you a hand. You will find what a great bunch is on this site.

wire brushes, scrapers, putty knifes, flathead screwdrivers for the thick stuff, then
Engine degreaser, or cheap dollar store oven cleaner and very hot water with a pressure washer or car wash late at night...

I've done this method for engines and I think having a pressure washer and very hot water is the best. just make sure you dry the water out once your done. you may want to replace gasket seals etc if nothing else just to keep it from leaking oil

good luck

Josh

edit, oops; what the guys above said.... thats what happens when it takes 2 hours to type my response

Ditto on this, but I now use "Purple Power" instead of Simple Green.
This Purple Power is an awesome cleaner. Keep it OFF your skin though..
It is biodegradable and safe for the environment, water based(I think)
But it is not good on your bare hands/skin. Don't ask how I know...

And like everyone else told you, this forum is full of nothing but great people.
We may poke a little fun occasionally, but the intentions are nothing but the best! Welcome!

I drove an old Ford truck with the crash box and two speed rear end for a living for several years. Just takes a little practise, mind you I was raised on a farm and we had one of them for hauling hay, horse and cows.

Just call me Jeff, Nicolle is my wife. I didn't want anyone to think I have two personalities!
I buy it at autozone, $6-7 a gallon. I started to brag about it when I was rebuilding my engine. I took the roller lifters apart one by one and cleaned them out with typical parts washing solvent/ parts tank. They really didn't get very clean. Carb cleaner...brake cleaner...anything I tried made no difference..I was told to try it, so I did. A plastic coffee can filled enough to submerge them overnight. They came out looking brand new! Don't forget to rinse it off.
One thing i don't like, it's thin like water, doesn't stay on long.
If left open to the air, it will gel up and won't be any good.
Just what I learned about. Hope the result are as good as mine!
I also used it for tranny parts. I like it.

WalMart and some other places sell Purple in a 2.5 gallon jug, for about $12. That is nearly 30% cheaper, and trust me, you'll use plenty of it. Great for cleaning up the garage floor, too.
