97 Hood Latch Problems

Opened the hood tonite to fix windshield wiper problem, when I solved that I found the hood would not latch.

Has anyone had a similar problem?
Does anyone have any links to pictures of the latch assembly?

It appears something on the bottom (spring? cable?) may be the issue.

just happened to my 2001. unbolt the two bolts (don't drop!!) and lube up the part of the latch that the cable goes into. it gets stuck in the open position. load it up with grease, you don't want to do it again

Solved!

The bottom / smaller spring had snapped. It's the spring that attached the latch cable to the latch mechanism.

The entire latch can be bought from Rock for $15. Unfortunately I'm in Canada so with shipping it would cost me $50 and a few days to get here.
Stealership here wants $70.

What I did was buy a spring for $3 from the parts store to replace the broken one. Not exactly the same but works fine. Cleaned and lubed everything up as suggested - not a big job, but the rad skirt needs to be removed and a pass thru socket/wrench is best as it's tight spacing.

Next time I plan on heading south I'll make sure to place a Rock order that I can pickup and get the entire mechanism.

Good Job!

You can't directly post unless you're a supporter ($20/year)

You CAN get a free account on photobucket (should still be free), post there and do a link

( click on the insert image and you'll get a dialog asking for the url)
