I was not comfortable with the noise I got before I shut down the engine so before I put the injector back I pulled the oil filter. I cut it open and found this. I have to think I am losing a bearing. Is there anything else in the engine that would make this much brass?
There was a post not too long ago where the OP found brass in his engine. I got the idea that the HPOP must have some brass parts inside, but I've never opened one up . There may be other brass components in the engine but the bottom end bearings (mains, rods) aren't made of brass.
I would have thought the mains were brass or brass colored under the soft silvery outer part. If it is in the hpop or turbo that would be good news as compared to losing a crank. And they are easier to get to as well. Thanks for the help. I will busy myself getting into the hpop. The turbo feels good so I will leave it unless I find nothing in the hpop
OK I have the hpop in my hands and I can not figure any to tell if it is making brass or not. I can't get inside of it to look at the bushings so where to go from here? Any ideas?
Maybe one of the Tech's will be along shortly to give us some tips on how to evaluate it on the bench. I believe it should turn fairly smoothly by hand, maybe you could pour some oil in the inlet turn the pump gear by hand and inspect what comes out? Did we talk about the IPR screen? (I can't go back to the first page on my phone).
The IPR screen is clean. I was thinking any brass from the pump would end up in the pan rather than in the oil output from the pump. Or does all oil entering pump leave through the output? Or put another way is the suction for the pump inclusive of the pumps crankcase area?
I would think it the brass were coming from the pump you would see brass on the IPR screen. because what the pump picks up either goes through the IPR valve or out to the high pressure oil rail.
There must be brass components somewhere else in the system, because doesnt the turbo oil drain to the HPOP housing? So if the brass were coming from the turbo you should end up with it in the IPR valve regardless. We definately need one of our resident techies here.
I have the hpop in my vice and the ipr screwed back in place. With the pump held upside down in the vice so I can fill the inlet with oil it will not pump any oil through itself. Even with a drill driving the pump. Now I assume the pump was good when I shut the engine down so what is going on here? If it won't pump on the bench why would I re-install it. Am I doing something to inhibit the pump or did I somehow damage it?
