Well, after resolving that I couldn't use my spare 97 fuel bowl with my 95 (because I didn't have a FPR that would fit it), another member sold me a very nice spare 95 bowl (thanks!) and I dismantled the 97 for inspection prior to giving it to my neighbor. He has a 97 with a 'holey' fuel bowl.

Looks like serious pitting has started. The bowl doesn't have any pinholes or cracks and doesn't leak but it looks like that might happen in the not terribly distant future. Is the preferred fix for this pitting still to coat the bottom of the bowl (or just fill the pits) with JB Weld?
