88 f350 rearend question

here's my question: I have a 88 f350 with 5.8l C6 and 5:10 rearend. The great state of california is going to bankrupt me trying to register and smog it (truck was bought when i lived in Texas). My question is what rearend can i run in it to use for drag racing. The Barona indian reservation here has public drag races.

yes drag race it. I can't think of anything else to do with it but part it out. pretty sure about the gearing it gets about 4 gallons to the mile. It has a homemade flat bed on it.

Before you throw in the towel on that F350 check around a bit. You might find that making your truck CA emissions compliant may not be the financial nightmare you think. When our son moved to southern CA last year with his 92 Bronco all he needed was a CARB compliant catalytic converter - and it then tested with better sniffer numbers than a lot of vehicles considerably newer. His total cost was less than $300! It does pay to check around: Some shops are more newcomer friendly than others. It is not that they are skirting the law; they are just more willing to help folks. A properly tuned engine in otherwise good condition when teamed with a functional catalytic converter should be able to pass CA testing fair & square.

You might also do well to do a search and/or post on this matter in the CA FTE Chapter section. Some of these good folks that are your new neighbors could probably offer some great insights.

No.. but the 351 would fit in a Mustang... and make a much better drag racer.

Mistaken identity...

Perhaps I misunderstood - Is your end goal to have a drag racer or a truck in your new state of residence? In other words, a toy or a tool?

i have checked around i have been back here for awhile now and have already put $ into trying to get it legal. I have checked around the biggest issue is the truck had the cab replaced in Texas due to a fire and I can not verify the VIN#. It's not stolen I have the title and it was regestered in Texas. DMV can not verify the VIN and I can not find the VIN that is on the frame

Oh, A Potpourri F-Series...

Mixed & matched parts - well that introduces a whole new twist. Yes, CA DMV will put you through your paces on that VIN thing. But still, if you are wanting to make it street legal check with some of the CA FTEers. They can probably lend some insight. If you're still not successful... drag stands for Drop Repeatedly Another Grand!

yes it's a shame the truck runs great and will pull anything around as long as there's a gas station within sight

Very few degrees of separation...

That venerable old C6 was an option I briefly considered when I ordered my 95 F350 in the fall of 94, but I have certainly never regretted opting for the E4OD - even at the $800 additional cost. It has paid for itself multiple times over in the past 479,000+ miles.

I also have now noted in your ID that you are not far from that midwest Bronco turned southern Californian - along with our son. They are both there in the San Diego area. His Bronco has an E4OD behind the 302 that will get 17 MPG; even at 70 MPH. Not too bad for a vehicle that, as he says, "has the aerodynamics of a brick".

Vin is supposedly stamped on the frame on the passenger side, top of the frame possibly just even with the front wheel. Not sure how to get to it.
