Help, can't get fuel filter cap off. :(

Has anyone else ever had to deal with a fuel filter cap that looks like this one. It takes a 1 inch wrench to fit it, but every tool I have tried using has just slipped off and started gouging the head. I have watch a few videos and read a few threads on replacing the fuel filter, but have not seen a cap like this one yet. Please help.

I am not sure, but if you open the drain valve and let the pressure off, it might move easier.

And yes that is the way Wix does it.

I use a strap wrench myself. If I didn't have a strap wrench I would try channel locks or vise grips and get a stock lid once I got it off.

Without the fuel pump running there is no pressure in the fuel bowl.

Edit: Sounds like it was put on too tight. I get it as tight by hand as possible and just 1/4 turn with a strap wrench.

A pair of channel loc pliers or pipe wrench may work.

You're oil filter wrench should fit the outer ridge on the cap. Use it to get a better grip and unscrew the cap.

Thanks everyone, I will try the oil filter wrench idea. I have tried using lock pliers but they just started ripping the plastic off. I just hope there is enough side wall to the lid to get a grip.

Grab it with channel locks and tap on the edge all around while you try turning it.

Did your new filter come with a replacement lid? If it did a small hammer and a chisel should be able to get enought bite to spin it off if all else fails.

Yah, got it off. Oh my gosh was that thing dirty. Had to use a ratchet with a crows foot and almost hold it down with my chest while I turned it very slowly. Should I be worried if it looks like there is sand at the bottom of the filter bowl? going to clean it out, but everything else looks good. the old filter didn't even have a screen and looks half the size of the one I got to replace it.

SAND!?!
Definitely not a good thing to have anywhere in the fuel system.

Well, got the new filter in. Thanks for the good ideas. Used a ford wrench to tighten down the new one. Truck seems to be running smoother.

That dose not look like the stock cap. I would get the stock cap and filter from ford. Some things need to be OEM.

I have that same cap, didn't realize it was non-OEM. I used a 6 point socket on that thing and it worked pretty well. Will be changing to the OEM cap now that I know this is aftermarket.

That is the same style cap wix uses on their filters. I have no problems with them and been using them for last year or so.
