Transmission Issues

Okay so I use to have an F150 and post here a lot. I bought an F250, 2005. Its got 157k on it. Someone did use it to pull a goose neck trailer. I ran the free hybrid race tune from spartan for few weeks before buying an Innovative Diesel Tune from Eric. He tuned it with the later flash for my truck because I wanted Vane Sweep, it is Xtreme Street. Prior to all this the Hybrid Race tune would act like it was jumping out of gear at around 30mph when accelerating, when it was first tuned. It was just an awful unfinished tune, which is why I went with Eric. The moment I returned my truck to stock, to get home and put Erics tune on after it was still doing the funny shifting thing. It never done it real bad to begin with. My Tow Haul Light came on about half way home from the erratic shifting which got worse. I tuned it with Eric's tune and that all went away. I've been driving the truck for about 2 weeks with Erics tune. It pulled and shifted great.

Well the other day I got stuck a little bit out on our farm. I was not out mudding, just stuck a little bit and gave her some fuel, and let the tires dig enough to get me out. It was fine first time I've ever really had it off road or spun the tires like that. I mention that because I think it could of caused what is happening now, MAYBE.

I drove the truck after that and it was fine until today. I went to work, and on my lunch took a 15 mile drive to have dinner at my grandma's. It was making a weird racket but hard to tell it kind of sounded like air being sucked in harder. I had just done the zoodad mod a few days ago, and hadn't really been listening to it. So I thought maybe I was just hearing a whoosh from that, plus I had the radio going. Well it started shifting kind of funny on the way there, but straightened out okay after I got on it a little bit trying to make it do it more. I got out there, ate, and left back for work. It was still doing okay but acting funny at around 30 mph under slight acceleration, and for some odd reason not pulling as hard when I rolled into it. My belt on my truck is a little warn, and I was running the A/C so I thought maybe I was hearing the a/c kicking in it and out making the funny sound. So I drove on since it seemed to straighten out.

I got back to work, parked truck. Shut it off. Finished up at work left, and on my way it was jumping in and out of gear, lugging hard taking off like it was in a higher gear still. It was evening shift down real hard. (Its kind of acted funny before and I always assumed it was that race tune, or maybe it was just relearning some say it takes awhile to relearn.) Anyway after driving it I stopped in at advanced auto to talk to my buddy and ask him his opinion, at this point I can hear with the window down what sounds like a whine or even a grinding sound... I pulled in talked to him. He said maybe the convertor. So I backed out, and headed for my house. Went to get on it to get up with traffic it hit 50 mph and bounced off rev limited, wouldn't shift right at all. After letting off it went ahead and shifted down but hard. So I pulled in and parked it. I tried to put it in reverse and it took forever to go in reverse, and when it finally did I had to bring RPM's up real high to get it to respond. After doing this a few times it finally wouldn't even go into reverse. My buddy came with his trailer, and when we were putting it on the trailer even in park or drive it was making a whining sound, that was intermittent. In drive gear it would pull itself but I had to get it up in rpm's higher then normal to make it pull.

So if you read all that my question is did I smoke the transmission? What could it be? Its at the shop now but I am wanting answers from an outside source, and always been able to turn to this forum.

Its completely stock except the tune and straight piped. I did do the zoodad mod. As far as I know the motor at some point in time has been pulled for head gaskets or something worse. Really don't know who owned it before me. Going to find out here soon.

The transmission has fluid. It smells sort of like power streering fluid. Its not what I would call brown, its still newer looking. There is no metal or gray color to the dipstick. Prior to this it shifted fine almost all the time, especially with Eric's tune. That Hybrid Race Tune would shift funky if you first tuned it, and if you drove it easy it would eventually go away on its own and not come back. Eric's never did this at all. It shifted fine from the beginning. I am not really hard on the truck. I didn't hear nothing snap, and even in 4x4 its the same results.

I had similar issues about a year ago. Turns out it was the tranny. When I got my new one from Ford it came with a bigger trans cooler, so I guess Ford figured out heat was an issue and made a bigger cooler. I installed the new cooler and tranny and shes happy as hell now. Cost = $2800 but it came with everything. I did the install.
