ok, I know this forum is for the F series Ford and I have a E350 class C but this seems to be the best forum to ask the ?
92000 miles on the E350 (6.8L engine) and still have the original brakes. Checked pad thickness at last tire rotation/alignment and pads are down to 3-4 mm thickness.
My shop said I needed to replace all calipers when I did the brakes because the pistons are phenolic.
What's the recommend procedure on brake R&R for the SD and HD Fords?
It seems a waste of money to me to replace non-leaking calipers. I am leaning toward new rotors, pads, and replacing the brake fluid with DOT 4.
I would appreciate others experience and comments.
I replaced my passenger side front caliper only because it dug into the rivets on the pads. I only replaced that one and new pads in the front and rotors, then topped brake fluid off and bled passenger side, then drivers side.
You may not need to replace the calipers, but they should at least be checked. If they show any signs of leaking, pitting in the bore, or the bore has ridges that can be seen of felt as the piston is inserted, then the calipers need to be replaced or rebuilt. A typical caliper rebuild kit costs under $10.
I've only changed them when they start hanging up and not fully releasing, at the same time I change the caliper bracket because once they start hanging up they egg out the mounting holes on the bracket.
I found this out personally when I went thru 2 sets of pads and 1 caliper more than I should have because the boots melted. when I talked to my parts guy, he told me about the holes egging out. when I disassembled the bracket and looked at the holes surenuff they werent perfectly round anymore. now I just change them at the same time as cheap insurance.
