My 2003 XLT 5.4 had to sit awhile while I took my sweet time fixing a wheel hub assembly issue. Maybe sat 2 months. Now about a week after driving and a tank fill I had a check engine light. This morning it started flashing but stopped. I have read this is a misfire and though I might have felt that in the ride a couple days ago. Two things:
- Is it common for a truck that sat long to misfire upon going again without tune up?
- Does the flashing make it more serious?
1. Apparently!
2. Absolutely! When flashing it means there is a sufficient amount of raw gas going into the exhaust to destroy the catalytic converters.
I suggest that you remove all of the spark plugs and check for raw gas on them. If you have a leaking injector it could allow enough fuel to enter a cylinder and hydraulic a connecting rod when you try to start it and that is a bad thing as well as expensive. I would check it immediately, before starting again.
If you find raw gas you should cover that plug hole and crank the engine over to clear the fuel and then replace that cylinder's injector.
