hey guys i replaced my clutch in my 99 f350 7.3 about 3-4 yrs ago maybe 20k to 30k miles (guessing cause odometer doesnt work) and it has already started slipping again. what should i expect from a clutch? i sure thought id get more than that out of it. what do yall think? is there anything that could be causing it to slip other than being wore out?
i really like my truck but i dont know if i want to crawl under it and pull the tranny every couple yrs.
Maybe there are other causes. Do you know if the rear main seal is leaking on it? Is the release fork fully released when you release the pedal? Driving style can make a big difference as well. I've heard of someone burning up a new clutch in one day because he was learning to drive a manual transmission.
It really depends on the driving impediments, but typically I get 100K out of a clutch assembly......a few of our famil vehicles went 200K. For replacements I have always used.........

typically 24 hr service, been around for 30+ years, excellent quality and typically a few bucks cheaper than oem.
well i dont think its the driving style as ive been driving a stick for 20+ yrs. i havent noticed any rear main seal issues, at least there is not enough to drip. i havent gotten under there yet.
how would i be able to tell if the fork is releasing all the way?
when i replaced it before i actually busted the center hub out of the clutch. my fault, being dumb. i was trying to pull about a 14k load up a steep dirt hill. in 4low with alot of wheel hop. i feel certain thats what done it in. when i pulled it i did notice some slop in the input shaft bearing but the cost to repair was just as much as a new tranny so i decided to run it til it went kaput. it has a slight growl at idle in neut but its not bad and hasnt gotten any worse. under power it feels fine.
Does the truck have a DMF flywheel in it?
The DMF flywheel has a slip clutch inside of it that is supposed to protect the transmission from an overload of torque. Unfortunately it can overheat and once it slips, it will slip all the time. So its entirely possible your clutch is fine (and should be if you know how to use a clutch...) but the DMF is shot.
ive never heard of a dmf flywheel. is it aftermarket? i know ive never put one in it before. how can i tell?
the truck doesnt slip too bad driving normally. hardly noticable in fact. but when im on the interstate running at higher speeds in the higher gears, and i punch it , it completely spins loose.
I would stick my nose down there and see if it smells burnt clutch lining, recheck all your adjustments and look for oil on the disc area. 100K sounds about right for a clutch with normal useage but driving habits and lack of maintenence are what cause premature clutch failure. Make sure all related parts are inspected and clean prior to reassembly. Resurface the flywheel, a good machine shop will tell you if the flywheel is reuseable.
Good luck!!

thanks for the advice guys!
Of course it depends on usage, but on avg 100k miles.
i cant remember if i had the flywheel resurfaced its been a while.(only 15-20kmi though) can it shorten the life that bad?
ive smelled the clutch on a couple of occasions when i was trying to back the boat into a tight space but i wouldnt have thought it was enough to hurt the clutch. i know i dont drive the truck (clutch) hard on a regular basis.

After useage the flywheel gets a hard smooth glaze that causes the clutch surface to glaze up also which leads to slipping. It should be resurfaced when installing a new disc.
ok so i got it all tore down. disc is wore down to the rivets. the rear main and the front input seal were both leaking. but not bad. the disc and pressure plate were dry as a bone. the flywheel was glazed and had some small cracks in it. and the pilot bushing was shot and the shaft had deep grooves from the worn pb.
mechanic seems to think the worn shaft and pb re causing the premature wear. he says the play in the input bearing is normal. a diff mech friend said its not normal and needs a new bearing.
im not trying to break the bank here. i dont want to spend anymore than i have too. but i dont want to have to go through this again 20k miles later.
so what do yall think? im def gonna replace the fw,clutch,pp,pb, and seals. should i replace the tranny? or trust the rest will fix the problem?
