I got an 87 f150 300-six with dual tanks. The front tank had rust holes in it so i took it out. I want to eventually put a front tank back in when I can afford it but for now I just want to cap the lines, without completely removing them.
When the truck is running it still sends unburnt fuel back to the front tank even though its coming from the rear tank. Whats not right here? Is it simpler to cap the lines and not worry about it or fix the valve or whatever might be malfunctioning?
I also took off the small (3/16") line for the vent on top of the tank because its all rusted apart. Can I just cap that vent off too or do I really need it? Its been rusted apart (up at the box thing next to the radiator and battery) since I bought the truck 3 yrs ago
Yes you probably have a selector valve issue, but even if you didn't I'd want to have those lines plugged if for no other reason but to keep dirt out. You can fabricate some plugs for the fuel lines from old bolts, just get a pair with a length of smooth shank between the head and threads, cut off the threads and round over the edge, and push those into the fuel lines and re-install the retainer clips. The fuel lines have an O-ring that will seal against the bolt, and you will have to shape the bolt head a little with a grinder to get the clips in, but once you get it right this works very well, I ran my truck for over a year like this with no issue.
