hi im working on a 51 f4 ford truck with a flathead v8 the carb and fuel tank have both been rebuilt when driving the truck it has no power the points and condensor plugs cap rotor and wires have all been replaced but it still spits and sputters it did back fire and blew the muffler apart i feel its an ignition problem but not positive any advice would be helpful
If it backfired and damaged the muffler, that indicates that there was a build up of fuel in the muffler that was ignighted by hot exhaust. The spitting and sputtering along with unburned fuel collecting in the exhaust would indicate that one or more cylinders is not firing. At least not when it's supposed to. Double check that the plug wires are routed correctly. Another possibility is the carb float/needle and seat, may be set incorrectly or hung up, allowing too much fuel into the intake manifold. Good luck.
I had the same problem with my 54 .. the power to the points in the distributor run's under the point plate ..and is a very fine wire ..mine had rubbed through in 2 places and was not visible till I removed the points plate ..also ..check your vacuum lines ..my wiper vac line was leaking and causeing it to run lean ..and yah the back fire is impressive isn't it ??
my first thought as i read your post was firing order. could also be timing WAY off. I made a nice loud backfire once that way. It was so loud i just closed my eyes and prayed i was still alive... lol. Found out the new harmonic balancer had timing marks on each 180 degrees. Half off!!!!
Check the coil too. I had a similar problem in my 52 with the 215 motor. Was dumping a lot of fuel. I ended up rebuilding the motor and replacing the points and coil with Pertronix. Problem solved. I'm not saying that you need a rebuild, just check what's been suggested.
