Congrats on the truck. You need to know the code that is being set when the Check Engine Light (CEL) comes on. This will point you in the right direction to repair the truck. An oasis report is a list of repairs done at a dealership ( usually just the warranty stuff) and is available from them. Some owners are reporting they are getting stingy about giving them out.
Flip through the threads in the tech folder for lots of good info. I think ther's one for new owners. Also go to this thread --> https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...ew-owners.html and request a copy of the spreadsheet. It's a great resource for all things 6.0. Be sure to post an e-mail address to receive it at.
Welcome to FTE!

go buy yourself a scanguage II, about $150 at autozone.

without a way to know what error codes are being set, nobody
here can help you.... it'd be like you telling us what you see in
the rear view mirror, and us telling you how to parallell park.

FYI, 99 44/100% of us here woulda told you to check the codes
and data BEFORE you bought the truck.....

you also need to be able to monitor some engine info, like
voltage, ICP, coolant temp, oil temp, and FICM voltage.

dis not be yo' grandmomma's diesel. there are some pretty
simple things, like battery condition, coolant condition, and
lubrication oil, that if ignored, can cost you, literally, $10,000.00

if you take care of those, you can run half a million miles... if
you don't, life will suck, and be expensive.

Thanks Rusty! I am a newbie to the 6.0. I bought the truck a month ago with 117000 and in Great shape love the truck but as I said the engine light likes to come on.first time I took it back to lot they checked the cel and got a p0229 the intercooler had a hole in it so they replaced and cleared cel had for two days and cel came on again this time it was egr so they said .they want to clean it and clear cel again! truck runs great .just a worried new owner.are the 6.0s known to throw a lot of nuisance code ,being the reason the sct is suggested to clear codes and tune truck better

These trucks are a little finicky but I wouldn't say they throw nuisance codes. OBDII actually works well most of the time. It's good that the place where you bought it is backing up the truck and what they told you sounds reasonable. The instrument panel is a different story. For example the sender for the oil pressure gauge is a simple switch that closes above 7psi and drives the gauge to the center position (no joke). The trans temp usually reads normal 100yards down the road. And the mpg/info display is affectionately referred to as the "lie o meter". Water temp wont go to HOT until truck is in meltdown mode. Fulthrotl is correct about adding gauges. The ScanGauge is an inexpensive option that works well except a little iffy on pulling codes. There are smartphone/Bluetooth options if you like your phone alot but you do need something to keep an eye on what's happening under the hood.
I'm not a tuner guy, my truck makes plenty of power for me and many problems posted here involve tuners. I will say there is alot of difference between units and the software you tune with so if you go that route do your research and choose wisely.

I agree Rusty .my truck is stock as I can tell the last thing I want is to put a lot of money into it right after buying it I am a contracter and only haul some lumber and a 20 ft camper on vac couple times a year.i only commented on sct tuner/programmer because of threads I have read suggested they make the 6.0 run more efficiently. The truck makes great power so what do you suggest maybe an edge so I can have the gauges to watch. basically I want to have truck for long time and do not want to abuse it.thanks for all your help much appreciated.

The Edge looks good, seems like I've read that it doesn't cover everything some of the less expensive monitors cover. BTW you will have to add sensors to the truck to monitor low side (crankcase) oil pressure, Exhaust Gas Temp (EGT), and fuel pressure. Some monitors can be upgraded to add sensors but the trucks factory set-up doesn't have sensors for these.
I have a ScanGauge and the DashBoss for iPhone. Both work well. If you use a Droid I think there is a similar app for it.
It's important for you to get temp readings for oil temp (EOT) and coolant temp (ECT) as soon as possible. The difference between the two numbers is a solid indicator for the condition of the oil and EGR coolers. This is the root cause of a cascade of failure that can cost a lot of money to fix, and can ruin head gaskets and even the entire engine. It's not necessary to be driving hard or pulling heavy for this to happen (but it does increase the risk a bit). Sorry if I sound all "doom and gloom" but I'm not exaggerating. You may read your numbers and find out you're fine but if you ignore it and it overheats badly you have an expensive -could have been avoided- mess.

Try to stay away from generic tunes, they are a one size fits all. Stay away from "shift on the fly" tuners. Banks stuff is overpriced and the monitor capabilities are lacking.

Your better tuners are the SCT devices with custom tunes, and Power Hungry Performance (PHP) Gryphon CS/CTS with custom tunes. Custom tunes allow you to set the truck up to your needs. You'll need to work with your custom tune writer to get the truck dialed in for your liking. Then if later on down the road you want to add bigger mods like injectors/turbo, you'll have a tuner that can support the bigger mods. Not to mention if you decide to delete the EGR system, you'll be able to keep the CEL off.

If your looking for a all in one monitor/tuner, then check out SCT Livewire TS. Some vendors include 3 custom tunes in the price as a package deal. The other is PHP Gryphon, also a monitor/tuner. Both of these will monitor the essentials for the 6.0 including add on external sensors with the right cables/sensors.

Here is a thought about the CEL that you got for the EGR. Pop the hood
and look next to the fuel and oil filter. There is a plug that should be
plugged into the EGR valve and it is not that will get you a CEL.
The EGR valve is in image#18 item #1

Enjoy your new truck. I know that the guys here have been a very
good resource for information and just a over all good time.

Please make your self welcome and pull up a nice log to sit on
and pass the beer/pop and tell your stories/problems.

Sean

NOTE : But really your best bet is with a scanner and a set of gauges SGII with the Xguages programed is one of the least $$ ways to go
