Do you mean a bolt broke off IN a bolt hole?

What size bolt?

How far below the surface?

Ok, do you mean to say, you were turning over the engine by hand, and one of the bolts holding it to the engine stand ripped out and took the threads with it? Or did you actually break the casting around one of the bolt holes?

For sake of conversation, I've had only five bolts in my tranny since I did the clutch in '97. Now I just did the clutch again a couple of months ago, and when I took the tranny out, the five bolts were still in there nice and tight, and there was no ill effects from running the diesel on five tranny bolts.

the bolt was in the hole and i had the front end of the motor supported with my cherry picker to and when i lowerd the cherry picker the pressure on the hole snapped the hole midway in so the hole is now open on the top end and its only half there

Take it to the machine shop. Sometimes it is possible to drill and tap the hole for a Helicoil or larger size bolt or plug then re-drill & tap the plug for the proper size. Otherwise you will be looking at running one less bolt like Freight Train did...

Ok, it sounds like it can be welded, then re-tapped. Time for a machine shop. I think I would send that bad boy back in on 5 bolts, then for piece of mind, just re-torque them after a few days.

Cut a 2X4 to fit between the floor and the balancer. Use grade 10 bolts long enough to go in at least 1 full inch of thread, and these things won't happen again.

Good luck,
Jared

From David-

"i was under the impression that you can't weld cast???"

You can weld cast but I don't like the results usually. I normally braze cast iron.

-sorry about loosing your post. I was trying to fix the "server busy" multiple posts from FT.

You can weld cast iron with a few preps first. Put a mark around the area with a temp indicating paint pen, heat the area with a rosebud intil you hit 425 degrees, and zap it with an EST rod on a DC welder. My big 'Stinkin Lincoln sa200 works like a charm for this.

I've done more exaust manifolds than I can count, some blocks, and my favorite, exaust manifold bolt holes.

Sorry about the multiple's, 79Lariot just had the same problem over in the general forum with a good run of about 14 postings. hehe

The forum mods can fix that problem when we see it. We dump the extra's off into the trash... Unfortunately this time a real post got swept up with the trash but I copied his comment.
