Shuddering during acceleration

I have a'92 Ford F150 with a 5.0 liter and a 5-speed manual transmission. I noticed here recently that it shudders or shakes noticeably when accelerating from a dead stand still AND while rolling. It also idles and runs on the highway real rough; like it's not running on all eight.

Any suggestions on what I should do to narrow down the wide range of problems it *could* be greatfully appreciated.

I have the same as you do, except AOD. I also had to same problem. When was the last time you changed the sparkplugs?
The first thing I did was take the air intake tube off and clean the carbon off. It helped very little, but it was still notable cause it was that bad. Then I took off the distributor cap and the contacts were pretty gone. I replaced that. I just replaced that alone cause it was getting dark and didn't have time to do the rest for awhile. That helped significantly. But I could still feel it. I changed plugs and wires. the plugs were at like 70.. I think they are supposed to be 53. If you still have the sticker under your hood with the vacuum lines, it should be on there. I think thats why I got that number from. I changed the wires cause they were the original wires from the factory. Said 1992 and Ford on em.. Also one boot was cracked and l broke one. After all this.. It now runs smooth.. My idle was also high cause I guess my dad kept turning it up higher and higher when the plugs wore and made it go lower.

Is the shuddering speed dependent? RPM dependent?

If it's speed, but not RPM dependent, it sounds like you may be in need of new U-joints, tire balancing, or something similar after the transmission.

If it's RPM dependent, the problem is before the transmission and could be a rough running motor or a problem with the transmission itself.

I did check spark plug number 1 in number 8 in the gap reading was between .07 and .06 so I do need to change those. I plan on checking the distributor and rotor next thanks for the input.

I believe the problem is most definitely rpm dependent it can be idling without being in gear and still shutter real bad. I plan on doing a ignition tune up as soon as I can to see if that solves the problem. Thank you for the ideas.

I've also change 2 out of 3 of the u-joints. the last u joint that needs to be replaced is near the transmission so that might be the problem as well.

If it shudders at idle you could have a broken or bent valve so do a compression check on all cylinders.
