My new garage is up but I won't be able to wire it or finish off the interior until the Spring. In the meantime, I've been scouring the classifieds for cabinets, shelves, etc. ie. items I'm going to need when I move in. One of the major item I needed was a larger workbench and I found these two steel tables that should do the trick. They came out of the Harrison radiator factory in Lockport NY (now Delphi). The tops are 3/4" plate steel, 24"D x 36L" and their about 48"H. They have to weigh at least 300lbs. each... really heavy tables. I bought them both for $150. (getting them here was a giant PITA!) I'm pushing them together and I'm just going to brush paint the legs (red) to match my toolboxes. Should be ideal to weld, hammer, etc. on.
So let's see what you built, bought, or found to hold your parts when you're in your garage or shop. (or any other cool shop tables, stands, etc. you fabricated, I need some inspiration to carry me until the springtime!)
Can I high jack this thread with where's waldo or Let's see your workbench right now?
Old kitchen cabinets, Formica counter tops matched to 2X4 and 2X6. Cheap and it works.
Sure... go for it! I've been looking at upper kitchen cabinets (for the back wall) and they are not very cheap (unless they're falling apart). That looks pretty durable and having storage is a real plus.
I have upper cabinets above. Small ones from over a stove over the workbench and the larger wall cabinets down both sides. I got the entire set free from a house that was about to be demolished.
Wally, I'd love to have one of those! I need a lathe table, those would be perfect! Great for welding too. You couldn't buy the steel for those prices.
Car hauler is nice, my friend has a racing trailer with the rolling tool cart and tire rack, compressor, etc... they really are rolling workshops.
I agree about the cost of the steel to make these tables. The guy was going to scrap them until i bought them. He was a really nice guy too. He loaded them onto my trailer with his tractor and showed me around his workshop. Sometimes you meet the coolest people when you least expect it.
Here's what I have inside of the garage so far (see pics). I scored (9) 48" light fixtures with extra ballasts and lamps for $55. They're T12 fixtures (instead of the more efficient T8's) but the price was right and i have a couple cases of F40T12 lamps and three extra ballasts so I rolled with them. I also found a brand new three door wall cabinet with shelves for $50. I found a Mobil sign face we took out of a cabinet at work. I also scored a free generator from work that needed some TLC (and $10. worth of parts). I'm getting there!
Those are great benches. I would love to have them in my garage. I found a 3/8" piece of plate at the scrapyard and made a table for it. The plate is a little warped from being in the yard so long but other than that it makes a great work bench. As for cabinets, if you have a local Habitat for Humanity ReStore, you might find a great deal on old cabinets there. Remodelers will bring in the ones they have ripped out of an older home and they usually sell for pretty cheap. Especially if you can get a one-off, or a couple of oddballs.
Great find in the tables. I would question the height, find it uncomfortable to use. You may want to consider cutting a bit from the legs to get at least one of the benches down to a normal working level.
I have an all steel table on steel wheels that I find very handy taking right to the job I am working on. It serves as my welding table also. I have two similar, although lighter tables, also on wheels. I find the portable benches extremely handy. My main work bench is 32" high by 30' L by 24" D bolted to the wall of my shop. My vice bolts at one end. The fixed workbench is quite solid, needs to be to withstand the forces I sometimes put on the vice.
I am not good with the computer & i never was able to post pictures, but i can tell you about my garage it is 32 X 40--2 10x10 doors-my workbench is 12ft long i put 3
2x12 together then i put liquid nails in between the 2x12 so that no liquid or small screws or any other small object would get stuck in there then i schelacked (ok so i cant spell) it,then i put a 1x2 on top of the bench & pushed it up against the wall & put liquid nails on the botto & back so that nothing would fall down there either--
on one of the side walls i have 5 kitchen cabnets with plywood on top of them

If you have enough cash you can have your garage outfitted nicer than your house! I'll stick to the used kitchen cabinets and old steel tables!
