I've got an 08 350 6.4 and have been having alot of issues lately. I started losing power periodically about a month ago while driving. The truck would act like it was stalling and then wouldn't allow me to go over 40mph. Ford dealer suggested that I change the fuel filters, air filter, and put new batteries in - all of which I did.
Now I've got a digital readout saying Reduced Engine Power nearly everyday - I pull a 10K trailer/bobcat daily. I've had it in the dealership 4 times now and have racked up over a grand in knick knack parts and labor trying to fix the issue. They've had it hooked up to the computer several times trying to diagnose the problem. I keep getting it back and the same issues come back. I've replaced all the sensors in the exhaust etc.
Could I have a thermostat problem? I'm lost and need power.
I second that... There's absolutely no reason to be guessing the problem when your truck is in "Limp" mode. There are specific codes that tell you what's wrong.
I appreciate the response. I've been a Ford guy my entire life - this is my first diesel, so my knowledge isn't very great yet.
The truck is stock. I haven't done anything to it as far as tuning or hacking the exhaust off.
The last receipt from the dealer shows that KOEO P0088 Fuel Rail Pressure was high. They ran a pin point test and followed TSB 12-7-7 and reprogrammed PCM to 79.05. Test drove and cleared code.
I called the service manager as soon as the wrench reappeared the next day - he said to check the coolant. The coolant level was fine. He now thinks that I have a thermostat issue and that it's 'sticking' and not releasing causing the engine to reduce power in order to save from blowing something up.
My regens are very few and far between. I bet I haven't had the cleaning exhaust in a couple weeks. When I do get it, it's a 10-12 second burst of thick white exhaust. No regen leads me to believe that I have exhaust issues - but then again, I'm new to all of this code stuff.
The white smoke is most likely one of two things: Coolant being burned or moisture in your charge air cooler. Not necessarily Regen related
You also have to remember that the "Cleaning Exhaust" message only shows for a few seconds upon Regen start. You have to go through the message center to initiate a system check to see if Regen is complete.
You definately need a different dealer. Did you change the fuel filters or did the dealer do it? Was there any sludge or build up on the filter? I got a tank of contaminated fuel and had a power reducing problem in one of my 08's that was caused by a clogged fuel filter.Had to drop the tank and flush it. Just a guess.
Unfortunately Scott is likely right about this one. Neither the VCV or PCV are serviceable parts, the HPFP needs to be replaced if the reflash doesn't fix this concern.
If that code is present a new HPFP is likely in your future.
