Since I havent done one of these in 30-40- years just how does a starter go into a yblock? its a 54 Merc 256 sitting in my 52 F1. Seems like the bendix cant get by the flywheel to sit in the pocket of the bellhousing. Any ideas? Rich
Since your asking how to get it IN, how did you get the old one OUT? Anyway, tight fit, may take some wigglin'. it won't go straight in, try at a angle until you get the drive past the flywheel. don't know about in a '52 F1, but sometimes it helps to curse. And turn the wheels to give more room around the steering linkage.
How's the old saying go? I can't find the hole unless it has hai... Ooh, never mind.
Well, it's kind of an unusual combo. Back in 54 a guy wrecked his brand new Mercury with less than 4000 miles on it. It sat for 30 years in his barn till a guy from the early ford v8 club bought it. He yanked the motor and put it in his 41 pickup using a commercial made adapter for the early trans. The stocker only guys in his club gave him so much flak about his non original motor that he pulled it out after a couple years(now has about 5000 total miles) and reinstalled his flathead. So it sat again for another 20+ years till he decide to put it on craigslist for $400. Plus he threw in all sorts of extra y block stuff. I have a 52 F1 with 83000 original miles bought from original owner. This is the cheapie model with painted bumpers and hubcaps. I WAS going to put in a 55 Cad motor that I had laying around but when the Merc came available I got it instead. Its mounted in the frame everything bolted down AND cranks over. Yep, while I had the motor on the stand to repaint it I put a bolt in soft plug behind the starter. The starter was hitting it and wouldnt go all the way in. So simple, so frustrating. Took up my Saturday. Wont be long though and it will be on the road. Rich
There is always a chance of overtightening the bolts when installing a starter motor in a y-block. The end result is the cast iron end plate breaks as the gasket can pose a problem. Make sure you have the gasket in correctly and don't overtighten the bolts!!
