T-86 Transmission Replacement

What are the problem areas for the T-86 overdrive? What can be checked with them out of the vehicle? I assume you could check for oil in the trans and overdrive unit. Can the gears be checked by rotating the input shaft or should I removed the side plate for a visual inspection. I planned on applying power to the solenoid and listening for signs of life. I have not found one locally, but did a Internet parts finder search and have at least 3 companies who have one available.

What is a reasonable price to pay?

Is there a rebuild kit that includes the needed syncros, bearings, seals to freshen it up? Or should I run it before spending additional money on it. We have adopted this truck as part of the family so I want it to last.

Lots of questions and any answers or suggestion will be appreciated.

Parts specific to the O/D unit itself are all obsolete, difficult to find. Trans parts are EZ to find at NAPA, indie autoparts stores.

The thing is, besides the trans (which should have the O/D solenoid & governor mounted to it), you will also need the O/D wiring harness, kickdown switch, relay and cable.

No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has the relay.

Be aware that the T-86 O/D was also used in Passenger Cars, the trans mounts differently than on F100's.

Cars have a different extension housing with a flange on it that the trans mount bolts to, then to the crossmember.

As much as I like O/D (my '65 came with T-85N O/D), finding the O/D specific parts is a PITA and expensive if you do find them.

The truck came with the OD so all the wiring and the cable lock out are in place. I am assuming the speedometer cable is also for the T-86 since it was not reconnected to the current 3 speed.

I am planning on holding out for trans from a truck. I want the truck to be as close to original as possible and do not want to do the custom work to use one from a car. I have begin to experience the PITA on the OD. I have seen some parts listed and it could get expensive if you needed two or three to complete the OD unit. I am viewing this a long term investment and mentally amortizing the cost over 20 years. My boys and wife love the truck and we plan to keep it forever.

Will the OD internal parts from the car transmission OD interchange with the the truck transmission's? I have seen several car transmissions locally and would pick one up for parts if they do.

Thank you for letting me know the trans parts are available at the local parts store. Also, thank you for your many post. Your information and dedication to the forum is much appreciated. I feel like a full member now you have replied to one of my threads.

Some car O/D parts (some date back to the 1941 Lincoln Continental/Zephyr!) are the same as a truck, some are not. Some F100 223 I-6 O/D parts are different from F100 292 O/D parts.

1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 70.3, Page 4 (trans), Page 5 (O/D unit).

Text / Transmission Application Charts / Section 70.2 / 1964 F100 292 3 O/D = Parts List: 70.2B

Catalog available on a CD from hipoparts.com. I suggest you get one, cuz you're gonna need it sooner or later.

Whatever parts you need related to the O/D itself I can search for, but the last time I did this, only found some of the parts.
