It is a job you can do yourself if you have the skill and tools needed. It's kind of a PITA to do but not impossible. If you only want to do the job once, Ford Racing and a few other aftermarket suppliers make ceramic coated shorty headers that are reasonably priced and bolt right in. If you go that route just make sure you get ceramic coated stainless headers as they'll last the life of the truck.

I recently replaced both L/R manifolds on my 2005 F150. I know only the pax side was bad but I decided to have them both done. Seems like another common issue with these year trucks. I elected to have a shop do it as I think it is a PITA. The possibility of bolts breaking off is real and this was something that was outside my comfort zone and time I have available to tackle this job.

A PITA is a huge understatement! The passenger side took me most of a saturday on my fx4. I had to loosen the motor mounts and jack up the engine as far as it would go (bending the oil pan in the process, but thats another story). It is somthing a novice can do, but don't get rushed. By the way, if you find any broken bolts, I suggest welding a nut onto whats left ofthe the broken off bolt allowing you to grab it with a vise grip.

Good luck.

Andy
